Photoshop eggsperts --- I need some advice

Guys,
One thing i've never been able to figure out is --- how do you make a see-through image on the background of a picture ?

As an example........
Ok, I have a picture of a man standing against a sky background.
I want to cut out the sky and make it "clear" ....... so when I post the picture of the man, his background is whatever colour the place i'm posting is ?

Does that make sense ?

My photoshops are Jasc software and Adobe 7.0

Anybody know how to do this ?

Go slowly, 'cause this is totally new to me.

You can draw a path around the man with the pen tool, and save that path as a clipping path. Whereever you post it/place it, only the part of the image which is inside the path will appear.

I see no "clipping path" options on the "save as"

Go up to "window" and scroll down. Make sure "Paths" is checked. You should have a path option box pop up. After you've drawn your path with the pen tool, go to the paths option box, and click on the arrow. A drop down menu will appear. Choose save path. Then choose "clipping path".

Both these photshops don't have a pen tool,

They have a hand select tool

is that right ?

I have no pen tool on adobe
I used the lasso tool.

The paths option on this box has NO options.
Its just a title

Sorry Mike. Looks like Mego 73's version may be the best bet for you. I didn't know you didn't have the pen tool and path options.

Mego73's is a pretty good approach---but doing that painting and erasing in a mask is nice because you can change what you've done.

I don't know how to do that.

Make believe I know nothing about layers in photo-shop (because I don't)

I right clicked on my mouse after I lasso'ed it but there's no copy option.

It should happen automatically when you do regular paste (instead of "Paste into).

When you select a portion of an image and then paste it it should be independant of the original image. That means you can move it around and other stuff like that. It's like a animation cel over a background.

If you go to the "Window" pull down menu and check "layers" you should get a readout window showing how many layers your image has(a list of layers in the image). I assume you are starting with a normal Jpeg and that will just show "background". Select the figure you want to isolate and paste and when you paste that will become layer one.

Once layer one is established you can hide the background by clicking the "eye" image (just looks like an open eye) near the background on the layer readout. The "eye will disapear and the background will disapear as well and you will see a grid of grey and white blocks behind the layer one image.

Then you can work on the image. You will have to resave image as a PSD (Photoshop document) or some similar format that supports layers.

Try to make this easy.

Erase everything you don't want to see.

Edit whatever else you want, resize, etc.

Save a a .GIF, and make sure you have either Index or Alpha Transparency selected. JPEGs will fill your erased parts with white.

Bingo. Done.
