View Full Version : The New SONTARANS revealed.
Is it just me, or are these new Sontarans a bit too small ?
I hate to complain because he looks pretty cool and is very much in line with the Classic Series Sontarans LOOK .....
It's just his size is laughably too tiny :)

They always seemed kind of puckish to be honest, I'm pleased that they didn't muck around with the look like they did during the JNT era.

It doesn't look too bad, Sontarans are supposed to be quite short .
It should have more of a potato head though and i'm not over keen on the uniform colour, maybe if it was black or gun metal like the originals it would look better.
I really liked the re-designed Sontarans in Shakedown.
Hmmmm....
They ARE supposed to be short ( "nasty, brutish and short" I believe was the line....) but much like Wolverine their height fluctuates based on who's in charge. I don't mind the uniform; it's not too different from the originals, except that these look to be plated.
I do miss the insanely huge "I'm overcompensating for something" rifles the originals had.
>It should have more of a potato head though
Yeah; or at least a more... unnatural looking one. Still, this one looks like the old ones with a bit more detail. So I'm happy. (Or perhaps "relieved" is a better term.)

The Head looks fine but I like the old suit better.

That's not too bad. When they said it would be Chris Ryan of the Young Ones I was a little scared because he's really short-maybe too short.
I don't remember the Sontarans being all that short. If you think about it they appeared alongside Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker and Colin Baker, and the first 2 actors are 2 of the tallest Doctors. So maybe the producer is not thinking correctly when he thinsg Sontarans are short. Still-not bad. I hope the story is good.

"Aren't you a little short for a Sontaran?" :) Maybe this particualr one is just an underaverage Sontaran...
I'm not really big on the JNT Sontarans.
I know they were in the Two Doctors, but I kinda forgot what they looked like.
I mostly remember them --or HIM --- from the Pertwee story.
The one where he gets an arrow through the back at the end.
In that story, he didn't seem short.

The JNT Sontarans are pretty much the same as Linx but a lot taller

I'm also thinking Jon Pertwee was a very big man.
He just about towered over anyone around him (as did Tom).
Hmmmm....
I've seen lots of refrences in different books that say the Sontarans are kinda short. Maybe this new one is them making that cannon by making a DECIDEDLY short Sontaran?

Last night I watched Peter Davison's The Visitation on DVD.
After the feature, I watched the special features-- which was a Peter Moffat retrospect.
They showed a few clips from the Two Doctors.
Boy those Sontarans were AWFUL.
I mean, embarrasingly lousy.
I haven't seen the Two Doctors for years and I forgot how bad they were.
edited to add a quick question about the Visitation.
Davison screwdriver get's smashed.
Is this the last we see of the screwdriver until Eccleston ?
I can't imagine, Colin McCoy and MaGann having one.

Until the McGann Movie, the Visitation was the last appearance of the sonic screwdriver.
Colin Baker had a thermal lance in Attack of the Cybermen.
In the TV movie the 7th Dr uses it to seal the casket containg the Master's remains.

The Sontaran's were always described as short.....bulbous, toad like humanoids with strong, compact bodies. This is due to the fact that their home planet has a much greater gravity than earth. It is interesting to point out that they are bred by cloning...so really there should be no differances at all. Things that have changed is the number of digits on each hand but this was explained that in the centuries between the Doctor meeting the sontarans in "The Time Warrior" and "The Sontaran Experiment" improvements have been made.
Saying all that the new design isn't bad but I hate the costume...seeing as the Judoon looked so much like Sontarans in last years series this can be forgiven as it would have been confusing for new viewers.....A much better design was independantly done in the "fan film" Shakedown.....A much better mask design.
