As a Marvel Family fan from near infancy, I've always liked Freddie. However, I never understood why he ever reverted back to his handicapped form. What possible purpose did it serve? It's not like he changed appearance or got bigger. And, I've always hated his name. I remember asking my parents if Cap was his dad since he has the JR in his name. I think, out of pure ignorance of the comics, they said yes.
He has one of the cooler costumes in comics. I'd like to see him return to the DCU, but with his blue motif and a new name. If anyone else has any interest in this goofy stuff like I do, grap Chip Kidd's Shazam book. Awesome stuff.

That Chip Kidd book looks beautiful.
I've given up hope for the Marvel's in the DCU proper. Sometimes I think it would be best if DC retconned the Marvel Family's Fawcett adventures to part of DC's Golden Age and invent a new character to wield the Power of SHAZAM. I had some hope with DC's new multiverse, the the Marvel Family might have new adventures in a world of their own. Unfortunately, DC doesn't interested in populating any of the other 51 earths.

Yeah I never understood why Freddy changed back into his crippled form either. I guess Ordway kind of addressed this by saying Shazam only had a finite amount of power and the three Marvels had to split it.
DC has totally destroyed the Marvel Family. What they did to Mary is inexcusable. Black Adam is the most over-used villain in the history of comics now. It's criminal, honestly.
It's almost as if there is a mindset at DC that still hates the characters for outselling Superman 60 years ago.
Ordway did a good job of integrating them in the DCU, but others mucked it up. I think Power of Shazam would have went over much better if he'd drawn it from the start. I didn't care for Peter Krause's art style much. Everyone looked over-bulky and pin-headed.
But those strips above are gorgeous! I do miss Jr.'s red cape though.

So cool it influenced Elvis, actually. Which is something that always struck me as odd--of all the comic heroes out there, what is it about Captain Marvel Jr that appealed so much to Elvis? That's like Paul McCartney being really into Robin or something.

Two words Mac Raboy one of the Great comic book Illustrators. I remember reading reprints of Junior and absolutely loved the art. Truly gifted artist.

Same here. I loved the old square bound books with reprinted material. Turned me on to a whole world of comic creators.

Yeah, I never minded that Raboy copied himself to meet deadlinies--the art was just that good!
Ross loves the Marvel Family, but DC rejected even his updated take on them.
And let's not discuss Winick...
I loved Ordway's version.

I'm with you. Having said that, I like pretty much everything Ordway does!

Right. That was always a question of mine. Why bother to be handicapped? Just stay Captain Marvel Jr. and pretend to be Freddy the handicap.
