I like Cash's version the best, as this is the one my father would play. Pride's comes in second for me.
Man...I should listen to this song right now...my nerves feel like they are going to POP outta my skins like in the movie 'Scanners'! :terror::smiley1:

Although I am very partial to Johnny Cash,I always think of Tom Jones when I hear this song. His voice just seems the best suited IMO.Maybe its only because its the version most played during the 70s?

Elvis Presley's version off his "Today" album is the best one.

I've actually been a part of this same discussion before with all of my buddies...and these were our points:
Porter Wagoner was the first and a lot of our parents played that one for us at some point.
Bobby Bare had a really good version of that song, but I can't find a link for it when he was in his prime.
Marty Robbins never recorded it, but versions of him singing it exists and his voice was made for that song. It would have been a hit.

Your list is definitive of the best versions recorded. I love every performer on that list. My pride in my assumption that Elvis owned every song he ever sung and the fact that Charley Pride was my first "favorite singer" makes them the sentimental favorites, BUT (and this was our consensus)......Tom Jones owns that song.
By the way, the dude that wrote that song was Curly Putman. He co-wrote another very bad-***, tear-jerker of a song:

(and despite your best memories...THIS song was not a hit in the "70s".)
