I DESPISE CGC...but this has to take the cake for the most ridiculous price I've ever seen on a CGC book:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1 cgc 9.4 White 1st print - eBay (item 320651905760 end time Feb-12-11 18:58:49 PST) (http://cgi.ebay.com/Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-1-cgc-9-4-White-1st-print-/320651905760?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aa857cae0#ht_867wt_1140)
I don't care that Ninja Turtles changed the indy market...that's absolutely ABSURD for that book.

I agree - it's kind of crazy - but then again you have this whole generation of kids who went nuts for the cartoon and toys - it kind of makes sense to me to some degree that #1 would be sought after like this.

holy crap!! :shocked2:
wow, that is awesome. I wish my copy was in that good of shape.
Hmmmm....
Even back in the day it went for astronomical prices; especially the proper FIRST first printing. And since the 80's are back you gotta expect this sort of thing.
I wonder if this'll open the flood gates for the specualtors who've been sitting on their Turtles stuff.

I thought it could get that much. it's been 27 years since it was first published and there were only 3000 copies of the first print. Printed on newsprint and B&W so a first printing might be a little harder to come by and it is the original version of TMNT.

Makes perfect sense to me. Tiny print run. How many in that verified condition. Millions of turtles fans, including the generation who grew up on the cartoon are hitting their thirties... Disposable income. It's definitely the candidate for that price range and will only increase over time given how huge the turtles were and continue to be... Hit animated movie recently shows.

They may have said there was only a print run of 3000...but I think there was a larger run than that. Seen a lot of 1st print on issue 1 over the last 20+ years. Still not seeing that number though as an end price on an auction.
>I think there was a larger run than that.
There was at least 6 reprints of #1. The very original was pretty small. (I thought it was less than 1000, but I don't know for sure.) Nobody really expected it to take off like it did.

I hate GCG too. Not easy to find someone to send off a book to be graded around here. I got mine back and was really ****ed by the grading.
I think the 20 year rule applies here. Yeah Ninja Turtles fans are the right age.
I remeber reading Action Comics 1 going for 2 to 5 grand in an old Starlog. I'd happily pay that now. Withe everything being digital mayeb a day will come where hard copies are valuable. ( I saw a DVD Rom of 40 years of hulk for 30$)
What freaks me out is I saw a Kenner Boxed Star Wars Death Star playset in a sealed plexiglass case for a bunch of $$$.
A whole playset????
I could do it for a baseball card or a historic comic I have a reprint of but a DEATH STAR?

My friend has a signed copy of that book. By both Eastman and Laird. He met them at a con in Chicago I think he said. It's his grail item. He was in his last year of high school when I was in my first. Our lockers were across the hall from each other and we've been friends ever since. He's one of the biggest Turtle fans I have ever met.

I don't think it's any more absurd than some of the prices Megos go for. Different strokes and all that...

Totally agree! Especially the print run.
