Traveling from Pennsylvania and Maryland to Florida in the Sixties and early 70's was an adventure.
Mom and Dad cursed the day I learned to read because I read out loud every South of the Border Billboard I saw!

Does anyone remember Pedro's South of the Border Souvenier stop on I-95 at the South Carolina/North Carolina border?

That burrito (pardon the pun) on the billboard looks like it had one too many servings of beans...

Stopped there two years ago on the way down to Myrtle Beach. It never seems to change to be honest, but it was never that much to begin with.

Stopped there back in '86 when my family went to Hilton Head Island.
Used to stop there every year going from NJ to Fl visiting my aunt and uncle.
Most memorable places along the way were South of the Border and Stuckey's :)
Last time I was there was like 10 years ago and they had gambling (believe it or not)

those signs are still there......I actually use them as a sort of countdown and something to do when driving from NY to florida.....althought my wife is usally driving by that point....straight through drive....best time yet 20 hours for 1200 miles.....we usually hit there around 3-4 am and that is when I need to rest a while. can't sleep in the car so I just rest the eyes

The place still exists and is open, even though no one is ever there. Just visited a little over a year ago. It was horrifying in that weird awesome way those places are.

Eat at Stuckey's and get GAS!
When we first went by Pedro's I kept pestering my parents to stop on the way back home. I wanted to buy a Blue Novelty! (I was 6 or 7 at the time!)

I have never been there myself, but my parents used to stop by every once in a while and get us cool stuff like giant rubber flys and hillbilly jigglers! :cool_y:
Looks like the 'mascot' there might be know as 'El Mucho Racisto', eh? On the offensive/should have been retired years ago-scale, I'd rank him right between 'Frito Bandito' and 'Lil Sambo'! :yeah::smiley1:
Love that entrance way as well...Man, entering through the spread legs of that GIANT Mexican sure brought back memories of county jail...it was the summer of 1988 and I had just met my cellmate, a 7' 4" Mexican fellow with a penchant for Victoria's Secret catalogues and stealing our desserts that we lovingly called "El Barbaro Amorosa"......
Whoooops! :smiley1:
...The donkey on the sign there seems to have the trots or some terrible gas...way to advertise your business guys - mucho mas frijoles, Senor Burro?! :smiley1:

I definitely remember it. There is a billboard every few miles from about 150 miles out. It is a great marketing gimmick and I had to stop there one year to find out what the hoopla was all about. I remember they sold fireworks which was always a plus since they are illegal in Maryland (except for ground based stuff) and everything else seemed like a ghost town. I haven't been down that way in years but I still remember some of the billboards. All pretty corny but definitely would catch your eye. I remember one with a big sausage on it that read "South of the Border, you never sausage a place"
