    Colouring Book Theatre: H.R. Pufnstuff

    H.R. Pufnstuf
It's been months since I found a good colouring book to review around here so I jumped on the horn and asked my friend Sharry (AKA Hardygirl on the Mego Museum forum) to dig one out of her pretty vast library and she chose this. To my surprise this book isn't vintage, it's from 2005!

I'll be honest and reveal to everyone that H.R. Pufnstuf scared the living crap out of me as a kid. That scene with the boat transforming just freaked out four year old Brian to where it actually left a l'il scar.

It didn't scare me in a "Jon Pertwee Doctor Who" way, it went deeper than that. As a result, despite being a 70s fetishist, this is one property I'm kind of lukewarm to...

Bring your LSD crayon and join me after the jump:

The art is actually very nice, I would have been shocked to see this on store shelves some 35 years after it left the air.

Freddy also scared me, what I can I say, I was a delicate little snowflake as a kid....

I'm suddenly craving a happy meal.

Oddly, I wasn't really bothered by Witchie poo but Mama Cass's appearance in the movie. That might be motivated by my dislike for musical numbers in kid's movies.

I guarantee no kid got this play on words, I had to think about it.

I have to crawl into the fetal position now. Feel free to call me a wuss, I deserve it.

    Thanks Sharry!

OK, I'll start....wuss! How can HR PufNStuf scare anyone? I thought he was cute. I can understand WitchiePoo, but she was more goofy than scary. I was really happy to get 2 of these books from a co-worker who knows I love all things Krofft, (I've worn a Lidsville t-shirt to school many times). It took me back to Saturday mornings when I was in nursery school and kindergarten, and hoping to collect all of the Living Island rings from the cereal box, (and getting stuck w/ 3 Ludicrous Lyons! ).

I'm sorry Puf scared you so bad, Brian. Maybe next time...I'll go w/ the Peanuts gang, OK?

I knew I was gonna catch hell for that but seriously this is like my #2 next to "Charley and the Chocolate Factory" in terms of the "poop pants" factor as a kid. Just didn't find anything endearing at that young age.

I have to admit, that witch was pretty damn scary at a young and tender age for me too. I am just amazed that I haven't bought the figures at some stage along the line.
