    Ideal's Beautiful Crissy

"Beautiful Crissy has beautiful hair that grows..." lol.

Kind a neat semi-forgotten toyline that just screams 70s mod style.

Crissy and her friends gimmick was a knob on their backs that made their long ponytails retract when you turned it and you could make it long again by pushing the release button and pulling the hair back out. The mechanism that did all this was actually pretty complicated and not to mention sturdy. The dolls had to be really abused to bust it and generally still work to this day.

Crissy never became as iconic as a lot of other 70s toys but was pretty popular in her day for a couple of years. One thing to look out for, girls combed the heck out of their hair and it can be challenging to get them with really nice hair.

Crissy (Second version with shorter hair. The 1969 version had hair to her feet) and Crissys cousin Movin' Groovin' Velvet.

Anyone else remember them? I remember reading HardyGirl has a nice collection of these.

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Yeah, I have some but not as nice as those. I did have a second version as a kid, I got her for Christmas when I was about 4 or 5. I don't have her anymore, but now I do have another second version, a black one that someone didn't love too well, a lot of her hair is missing. I also have a Turn Around Crissy that I have to fix b/c her string retracted all the way in her body. And I have a Beauty Braider Velvet. Thieir hair is in pretty OK shape. I like just brushing it and sometimes setting it to relax.

I remember Crissy. I'm pretty sure it was my sister who had it.
          Don't recall Velvet.

My cousin Aundrea had a black Velvet. And funny...I thought she was supposed to be black, b/c the paper doll book had a black Velvet too. I never saw a white Velvet until my teen years.

Did this doll have a TV campaign? I seem to remember commercials for her.

That's the first version, the hair to floor version. I have the second version that's hair to tush. The early versions had cheaper hair, and could melt if you wet the hair in warm or hot water. Mine doesn't do that.
