Hey, remember when cereal companies used to invent their own cereal icons, and they weren't from the latest movie or TV show? They even had little back stories like a mini cartoon show! I loved the Quisp and Quake competition. And Freakies ads were funny, so was Cap'n Crunch!

So who was yours?

I liked Tony the Tiger

Once in a while he sold cereal, other times he sold gasoline :)

Hmmm...I think you're comfusing Tony w/ the Exxon tiger, (who had the more rugged look!)

I'm going with Cap'n Crunch. I actually just worked on what they say will be the last Cap'n Crunch commercial ever. They are planning some new campaign less focused on advertising to kids. I have no idea what that means, but he's a victim in the war against obesity.

Gee I don't wanna pick favorites cuz these guys stops still stop over every morning while I'm eating breakfast and I'd hate to offend. Let's just say that

Frankenberry
Count Chocula
Booberry
Toucan Sam
Dig 'Em
Cap'n Crunch
The Trix Rabbit
Lucky the Leprechaun
Tony the Tiger
Snap, Crackle and Pop
Sugar Bear

are always welcome at my table!

Quisp. No doubt about it. The cereal was good too. I remember the vote
between Quisp and Quake. I seem to remember one with the Trix rabbit to
see if he finally got to eat some of the cereal.
The Freakies were also memorable. I had a set of little figurines of The
Freakies that you could send for. I have no idea whatever became of them.

I was always partial to
Lucky the Leprechaun

But I prefer the more old school version

not the one that looks more like he's been eating too much of his own cereal, or is hopped up on Meth

Never cared much for Bundy. Always thought Manson was kind of interesting in the way he had control over so many people.

Oh sorry, it says cereal icon

Captain Crunch by far.

Love that guy.

Always got a kick out of Sugarbear too, harrassing poor Granny all the time.

Sugar Bear's calm "Dean Martinesque" vibe always resonated well with me.

I remember a friend bringing a box of fruity pebbles to our dorm once, causing grown men to attempt to "trick Joe out of his fruity pebbles" for much of the day.

I do think Sugar Bear was the Pimp of 1970's Cereal Mascots though...

I agree. I like the character AND the cereal. It's tough to seperate the two. For instance, I love the monster cereal icons, but find the cereals inedible.

Tucan Sam was nice, he would say follow my nose and I'll hook you up.

Lucky had plenty of cereal at the end of the rainbow, but didn't want to share. Selfish pig.

Talk about selfish, how about those kids that wouldn't share their cereal with that rabbit? Trix are for kids? Who says? What is that some kind of law? In all 50 states? Is that some sort of religous rule? I say those kids were just punks.

What about that Coo Coo bird that freaked out over Cho Cho Puffs? One minute you're enjoying the unhealthy part of a nutriteous breakfast, the next minute you're covered in milk and cereal. I'm pretty sure they had ritalin in the 70's.

Snap Crackle and Pop were OK, but unless it was mixed with marshmallow their cereal sucked.

Cookie Crunch? Criminal.

Tony the Tiger? ...great

While I agree that Frankenberry and Booberry are pretty hard to stomach, I loves me some Count Chocula. I can eat nearly a whole box in one sitting.

I enjoyed Cookie Jarvis, the original mascot for Cookie Crisp.

Jet Jungle would have to be my favourite cereal icon.

I like Tony the Tiger, but I was recently watching the George Reeves Superman series on DVD and they showed some of the old Frosted Flakes commercials. I prefer the way they drew him back then, PLUS there was a little tiger hanging out with him. Why'd they get rid of him? He was adorable.

And does anyone know Captain Crunch's full name? My father-in-law told us this bit of trivia last night...

Tony Jr. got his own cereal for a while, Frosted Rice. But I think eventually Frosted Rice was merged into the Snap Crackle and Pop family of cereals and Tony Jr was without a job. Same goes for Tusky the Elephant from Cocoa Krispies.

I loved Quisp! The character and the cereal. I sent away for the stuffed toy and I still have him!
A close second is Freakies -- actually tasted a lot like Quisp -- I still have the plastic figures too!

Honorable Mention:
Count Chocula
Tony the Tiger
Trix Rabbit

THat wizard from Cookie Crisp was a cool one---Capn' Crunch is
the man though! Boo Berry gets a nod just for that Lorre voice alone!

I could probably eat a whole box of Pebbles in one sitting. Fruity or Cocoa. But the icons don't really qualify here I guess, since cereal commercials are only their side project.
