    International Bionic People

From the UK I bring you James Austin and Stevie Sommers, the "Don't Sue Us" Bionic couple. These unlicensed wonders were created by Tomland, a company that seemed to get it's kicks from knocking off Star Wars and other films. Their Star Raiders and Famous Monsters line are a both a child's and a lawyer's dream.

Our Bionic Man actually had another life as "Dral" a member of the aforementioned "Star Raiders". Recognize Dral's outfit? That's cause it's a rip off of Mattel's Pulsar outfit. So technically, he's wearing a knockoff off a suit that was in itself a knockoff, kind of makes you dizzy. Tomland knew no shame and we're better for it.

As a palate cleanse, I bring you the completely licensed "El Hombre Nuclear" from a toy company known as BASA in Peru. Lucky Peruvians had themselves a Steve Austin on a Mego body, I cannot tell you how much I love this toy, words have no meaning.

Awesome. I wonder if Dral was released before or after the Bionic man Tomland. The Bionic Woman series ran from 1976 to 1978, and the first Tomlands were stamped 1977, so I guess either chicken-egg scenario is possible. I guess it would make sense that the Dral head sculpt could have been based on Lee Majors. Or maybe it was based on Harrison Ford? Or maybe it was just some pre-existing generic doll sculpt they ripped off/ recycled.

I love the sticker on the Basa figure. With that you can almost hear the figure say "if you can't figure it out, this is me."

Great stuff! If only I could remember what the packaging for Tomland Bionic Man looked liked. I worked for Fantasy Books that Did Star Trek/Dr Who Cons in 1983 and almost bought this figure. But they wanted $20 back then and to me that was the price of Daredevil #2 so I bought that instead. I remember the bubble was flimsy and I had to staple it closed but that's it.

Those are great, thanks for sharing. And to think I didn't even know of these figures' existence up until a couple years ago. That's what I love about this place!

Okay...beating a dead horse here but I like the two Tomland Bionic Figures and have a few questions.

                              (1) Have any other figures of these guys ever surfaced before or are these the only two known Tomland Bionic Figures known to exist?

                              (2) Are the feet the same size on the Tomland Bionic Man and the Tomland Dral figure? (I know Dral wore boots.)

                              (3) Is the Bionic Man figure wearing shoes like the Tomland fly or are they different?

                              (4) Any pictures of the Bionic Woman with her shoes?

Just a few things rolling around in my head. Any answers would be appreciated.
