    1975 Imperial Toys Catalog

When discussing Rack Toys, Imperial Toy has to come up, they were and still are kings of the industry.

One of their formulas for success was to not invest heavily in licenses but create their own brands. It really did work as many of us had happy childhoos playing with Poopatroopers, Kooky Spooks and assorted Imperial animals such as Congo Gorilla.

Cool, New Zoo Revue! I would have loved those! I did have one of those giant teeny Yo Yos tied to the end of my camp duffel bag so I would know which one was mine. (it was the blue one w/ the yellow center) My older brother had the little western guys and I took one and carried it everywhere.

      >I'll pass on the dog show thanks and load up on more rubber snakes,

....I dunno.... are they Mego scale? Kromedome could really use an army of killer poodles.

      >you can never have enough!

Very true! When the local gag shop closed, me and my buddy Tim cleaned them out of rubber bugs, snakes, etc. I still have a dresser filled with 'em.

Interesting how Imperial was more or less like an early version of Mego when they sold little toys and novelties in checkout lanes.

I just picked up one of those Congo Gorillas at Zoloween a couple weeks ago. I didn't realize it was an Imperial toy, but I did recognize from childhood. I'm not sure why I liked such a cheap little figure so much, but I did (and do!).

So is this the same Imperial Toys that produced the "Legends of the Wild West" line in the early 1990s, a sort of followup to Empire Toys Legends of the West? Does anyone know if those companies relate, since they have such similar names and even logos (with the crown)?

Wanted: Legends of the West (Empire & Excel) and other western historically-based figures. Send me an offer.
Also interested in figures based on literary characters.

and how can you not be impressd with a company that can make a toy that is both spooky AND kooky?

So I assume the Congo Gorilla was Imperial's shot at making a King Kong toy without the license. I would have wanted that toy if I had come across it as a kid. Didn't Imperial make some other actual Kong toys later on or is that a different company?

I was just able to identify a few odd bug type toys I have as "Cuddley Wuddlys". Thanks.

Yeah in the 80s Imperial got the Universal and Godzilla licenses.

Sadly, this was the last year they sold the classic poopatrooper designs. Oh why oh why?

I have very found memories of my grandma bringing me some poopa's.
