Horror Express is a cool movie and Peter Cushing delivers one of the best lines in his entire career in it. I won't spoil the surprise.

White Zombie is also interesting. Fine Lugosi performance and good atmosphere.

Enjoy.

I went on a road trip last week and bought a double feature for a a buck at the Super Wally-World. The movies were The Last Man On Earth with Vincent Price and The Devil's Messenger with Lon Chaney Jr. I would have liked The Omega Man as the second feature but I'll live with this since my old vhs is wearing out from multiple showings.

I didnt get any classics this time around but I just got BUG with Ashley Judd , flight of the living dead, night of the living dead 3-d, and the last two Masters of Horrors I was missing.
Does anyone get the Masters of horror series? Argento has done a few of them. I think they are great for 1 hour shorts.

I finally got Lucio Fulci's "Zombie" on DVD and love it!
A zombie vs. a shark?
It don't get no better!
Of course my faves are Universal's classics and I'll be revisiting this Halloween.
Palitoy, I hope the "White Zombie" you got is a good transfer. I have seen some really bad ones that detract from the movie.
I love that one by the way.

Yeah, I got a cheap copy of "White Zombie" and it starts a few minutes into the movie.

I checked out "Flight of the Living dead" and it was crummy. I had high hopes based on the trailer. The other was "Death Proof" and I've seen that already, but it was better this time around. It seemed slow after watching "Planet Terror"

I'm looking to get "M" soon.

Night of the Sorcerers.

This is one that my grandmother told me about when I was a kid in the 70's. Yes, my GRANDMOTHER. It just now came out on DVD and I must say I'm very pleased. It took 30 years of waiting for all the blood shead, be-headings, vampires, zombies, bullwhipings, and babes with boobs. My NEW guilty pleasure. I wish my grandmother was still around to sit down and watch it with us. She would still get a kick out of it.

I got a tip here to go to Giant Tiger (thanks Stretchandro) and I got the 75th year edition of Frankenstein for $10. It was the only copy but they had tons of Dracula (I'm sorry that movie puts me to sleep). What a great DVD set, the extras alone are worth it.

However, the whole container just completely fell apart when I opened it.

I just picked up the Asian horror anthology 3 EXTREMES for dirt cheap at Blockbuster ($2.75!). It includes short films by Park Chan-Wook ("Old Boy"), Fruit Chan ("Durian Durian") and Takashi Miike ("Audition", "Ichi the Killer"). This is supposed to be pretty twisted, and I'm especially a Miike fan, so I'm looking forward to watching this. I'm always happy to see the less mainstream stuff sell for so cheap at BB.

I couldn't make myself buy either of the 75th Anniversary sets at original issue price, since I already have the Legacy sets for both characters. For $10.00, I'd have to bite the bullet though.
I agree that "Frankenstein" is definitely the better film of the two. "Dracula" has iconic performances by Bela Lugosi and Dwight Frye, but the rest of the cast is pretty lackluster. Once Dracula takes up residence at Carfax Abbey, the movie moves at a glacial pace. On a totally unrelated note, I'll be adding more crosses and garlic to my room tonight, just to be safe. That's where my wife and I both fell asleep (mid day) on our last attempt to watch it. She's a vampire movie fanatic and her favourite is Dracula's Daughter, which I view as a better film.

I would like to watch the extras on the Dracula disk so I might go back and get it as well.

Oh yeah, I agree with all of this. FRANKENSTEIN is infinitely better. I just have a hard time getting through DRACULA (and I'm a fan of several other Browning films), especially the second half. The lack of music and stagebound camera work certainly doesn't help (unfortunately, these two things may have been partly because this film was an early talkie). I have yet to actually watch the Spanish version (which is supposed to be superior on all counts except lacking the iconic presence of Lugosi in the title role).

Is there anything substantial on the 75th Anniversary sets that isn't on the Legacy sets? I already have the latter versions, so I don't know if it's worth my while to hunt down those $10 75th Ann. sets.

The Spanish version is definitely better, although Bela Lugosi was a much better Dracula. If they coulda done the Spanish version with Bela, it would've been perfect.

I ordered a copy of "Man of a Thousand Faces" from deepdiscount.com, and finally got to watch it last night. It had been awhile since I'd seen it, but overall it was entertaining. Of course, as an actual biography, it doesn't compare to the Chaney biography that was included on the TCM Lon Chaney set.
I'd been hearing over at the Universal Monster Army that Big Lots has just gotten in a bunch of movies at $3.00 a pop. I looked last week and didn't find much worth having, but this week a new display was up and chock full of movie goodness. I picked up eleven movies including:
Needful Things
Jack the Giant Killer
The Hound of the Baskervilles (Dudley Moore/Peter Cook version)
Making Mr. Right (it's not a monster movie, but I like it)
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes
The Fall of the House of Usher (Vincent Price rulez!)
The Ghoul (Boris Karloff rulez more!)
A Bucket of Blood
Konga
The Dunwich Horror
Swamp Thing
And at $3.00 a pop, you can't go wrong. Hit your local Big Lots before they're all gone!

I just picked up Cinematic Titanics "The Oozing Skull", which is actually a Sam Sherman/Al Adamson piece called "Brain of Blood" (Elvira ran this for years in the early ninties) which features much of the same cast from "Frankenstein VS Dracula".

Anyway, the movie is unimportant, the big deal is the reassembling of the original MST 3K cast and well, the magic is still there. It's not as slick as the show got during it's highlight but it's far better than season one.

With this project and rifftrax, MST3K fans have the best of both worlds.

I understand everyone's hatred for colorizing because I wholeheartedly share it (though the Psycho remake could have saved some money if they just colorized). On the other hand I have to say though I don't own the 50th version I did have the chance to see it at SDCC right before the release in 2007 with a panel that included Ray Harryhausen. THAT was cool.
Having watched it - this version is actually really impressive. What the colorizing did was not the typical, crappy "tinted" shading that we all hate. They used an interesting new digital tracking process that they talked about and they did a lot of research regarding date sensitive coloring, from the Colosseum (because it's colorized to the tone it was, as opposed to the post refurbishment color it is today) to not making the film look "modern." They were really sensitive about not trying to make it look like modern film stock, but instead it looks as if it were filmed back in the day on color stock which the film at the time just didn't have budget for. All in all I have to say it turned out very well.
Watching it was, for fans of the movie, a kind of weird experience though. The color process was so near seamless that you forget about it and can't figure out what the problem is. It was like watching Star Wars in black and white, if that makes sense.

Anyway I just got around to watching my copy of Matango a while back. Love me some Toho mushroom people.

a typical drive-in B-movie starring Ray Milland & Sam Elliott (early 70's)

"Blacula"
actually not too bad but very, very dated..."you jive turkey!"

"Dracula AD 1972"
Christopher Lee & Peter Cushing rule! a bit dated also.

Speaking of kids & movies:
My 6 year-old daughter just loves watching Eight-Legged Freaks & Gremlins whereas a lot of kids would have nightmares. She started watching my POTA tv series set too and loves that as well.

I love Eight-Legged Freaks. That movie is like a classic to me. I highly recommend it to anyone.

I just got Snowbeast.

It doesn't get any better then Yvette Mimieux and a killer Big Foot in the same movie

This one freaked me out a little as a kid. Just the deal with the victim seeing the off-camera Snowbeast, screaming and the scene suddenly going red - the guy trapped in the over-turned camper and the skier who almost goes over a cliff, stand out. Nothing violent was really shown, 1970's TV after all, but what was implied got under my skin.

My local Wal-Mart is just putting out their Halloween movies. It looks like mostly recent slasher films, sadly. The only two movies I saw so far that I still need to pick up are "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and the original "Halloween".

I just noticed this morning that Wal-Mart has put up a big section of mostly classic sci-fi/fantasy flicks beside the Halloween movies. Here's a breakdown of everything:
Star Trek II, III, IV, and VI
20 Million Miles to Earth
The Alligator People
Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (Daryl Hannah version)
Barbarella
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Critters
Cult Classics Double Feature (The Spider/War of the Colossal Beast)
Cyber Bandits
The Day the Earth Stood Still
The Day the World Ended (recent remake)
Dragonslayer
Dune
Earth Vs the Flying Saucers (colorized version)
Enemy Mine
Fire In the Sky
First Men In the Moon
Heavy Metal
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1950's version)
It Came From Beneath the Sea (colorized version)
Jason and the Argonauts
Ghosts of Mars
Johnny Mnemonic (save your money and buy it at Big Lots for $3)
Krull
The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra
The Mysterious Island
Planet of the Apes (1968 version)
Spacehunter
Starman
Stephen King's It
Teenage Caveman (recent remake)
The 13th Floor
The Time Machine (recent remake)
Tobor the Great
The Toxic Avenger
Videodrome
The War of the Worlds (1950's version)
I already have quite a few of these, but definitely plan to pick up a few on payday. I've been meaning to get "The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra" for awhile now, and at $7.00, I don't have any excuse to put it off anymore! ;)

Bruce Campbell is good. Mostly the reason I didn't get it was because it was rated R but I didn't look to see why. I don't mind violence and gore, it's the F-word every other word that just spoils a movie for me. Not that I don't hear it or haven't used it in a fit of anger; I just don't really care for movies laced with it.

Ah yes, the infamous werewolf sex scene ;) I sat down and watched the DVD tonight/this morning. Overall, the movie still works for me. I never realized that Robert Picardo (the Doctor from Voyager) was the main werewolf in the movie. My most recent horror pickup is the Blu-ray disc of FROM DUSK TILL DAWN. WOW, that was Robert Picardo? I haven't seen Howling since the late 80s. He really does get around. He was even in the live-action Ben 10 movie! For you comic geeks, he voiced Blackhawk and Amazo on JLU.

Yesterday we were walking out of Target and my son Andrew blurted out "Wolfman!" He stopped over at a register endcap and there was Monster Squad (the 80s movie) for $7.50. He's become quite the fan of werewolves and Larry Talbot in particular, in no small part thanks to the Universal Double Feature Brian sent our way (thanks Brian!). So we picked it up. Looking forward to watching it for the first time since it first came to video in the 80s.

I originally set out to just pick up all the Showa Era films ("Gojira" to "Terror of Mechagodzilla"), but I snagged a few good deals on enough of the Heisei and Millenium Era films that I just figured I might as well get all of them.

Brian,
I believe he's referring to a little film entitled Dracula Vs Frankenstein aka"ASSIGNMENT TERROR".
I saw it in the dollar bin at Rite Aid too. That movie RULES it's awesome you got it!
A favorite of both palitoy and myself(i have the awesome Spanish poster for that!)
The movie is goofy as hell ...but in the best possible way!
And to me,the makeup/costumes of the monsters strongly resemble Mego's Mad Monsters.

Definitely the Mummy who looks EXACTLY like the Mego figure!!
The Human Wolfman wd have to be like one of Naschy's roles in one of the later films like Werewolf and the Yeti or The Craving aka Night of the Werewolf to be a close representation, but the Dracula in the movie as well as the Frankenstein monster also CLOSELY resemble the Mego MM's.
(Brian we've talked about this...Frankenstein w big honkin' eyebrows LOL!
The similarity is happenstance and probably unrelated but this movie WAS out before MM's were available....so you never know.)
This is a fun, trashy early 70's monster bash film featuring Michael Rennie slumming it at the end of his career(I believe this was his last film)
and Spanish horror legend Paul Naschy in one of his many Waldemar Daninsky Werewolf films.
The whole cycle of his werewolf films are ALOT of fun but definitely check out Assignment Terror aka Dracula Vs. Frankenstien for the Mego
similarities.

I picked up a WB Sci-Fi Double Feature DVD yesterday that includes "Moon Zero Two" and "When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth". This was released recently as a Best Buy exclusive. I bought it to replace my tired old homemade VHS tape of "When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth". It's not the greatest cavemen vs dinosaur movie ever made, but the stop-motion critters are worth the price of admission. I found this copy yesterday at my semi-local Best Buy store. I had tried to order it online a couple of weeks ago, but apparently the scalpers are already selling this thing for $45-75 on eBay and Amazon. I discovered with a little research that some Best Buy stores had pulled their copies of this set after receiving complaints about some nudity in the dinosaur film. It appears that Warner Brothers inadvertently used the European cut of the movie, which has three or four scenes with very brief nudity, instead of the G-rated American cut. Luckily for me, Best Buy is apparently only pulling this set in individual stores that have received complaints, instead of just yanking it company-wide. I was just happy to get the set for $18.01 with tax instead of paying a scalper through the nose ;)

I recently acquired Cloverfield and The Mist on DVD -- similar movies with similar monsters that act as companion pieces to one another, though their styles are widely different. Cloverfield is probably the superior film, but The Mist is so creepy and spookifying, and so true to human nature, that I definitely rank it high on my list of all-time great horror films.

I also picked up an old VHS of The Wolf Man for $5. Wonderful photography and a palpable sense of horror balance out the hammy acting and head-scratching leaps in logic the movie makes. Judging by the (bootleg) trailer, the re-make is going to be brilliant, but the original is quite good as well.
