'Indy 4' Will Match 'Raiders,' George Lucas Says - Movie News Story | MTV Movie News (http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles/1571280/20071005/story.jhtml)

LOS ANGELES — Ever since Shia LaBeouf announced the title of the next "Indiana Jones" adventure at the MTV Video Music Awards, everyone from ordinary movie fans to Harvard archeologists have obsessed themselves with the meaning behind crystal skulls, the legendary artifacts Indy will search for in his fourth big-screen journey.

But that's nothing compared to how long George Lucas himself has been obsessed with these antique crystals, the legendary director recently admitted to MTV News.

"We did 'The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles' [TV show in 1992], and in the process of that, one of the scripts we were working on was about a crystal skull. I became fascinated with it there," Lucas revealed Wednesday on the red carpet for the American Film Institute's 40th anniversary at the ArcLight. "We've been through lots of different versions [of 'Indy 4'] the last 14 years, with five different writers. [But with crystal skulls] there's just a lot of aspects that seem to fit into our kind of a movie."

While Indy's Holy Grail "Crusade" gave him a taste of immortality, and his "Temple" quest for Sankara Stones brought him a glimpse of "fortune and glory," those relics are stuffy museum pieces compared to the power of the crystal skulls, Lucas asserted.

"I think this is actually better, it's up there with the Ark of the Covenant," he declared of the fourth film's "McGuffin" (a term coined by Alfred Hitchcock to describe an object which drives a film's plot). "Sankara Stones and the Holy Grail were a little tough, but I think this time we've really got a great one.

"The skulls themselves are real and a lot of the stuff in the movie is real, just like in the other movies," Lucas continued. "We don't base it on a lot of phony-baloney stuff. It's all based on at least true mythology that exists today that ... a certain amount of the population actually believes in."

Lucas emphasized that "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" is shaping up to be the best Indy flick since the first one, even going so far as to call "Skulls" tonally most like "Raiders." But whereas the Ark of the Covenant has very few historically ascribed powers, true believers attribute all sorts of abilities to the crystal skulls, ranging from the skulls being psychic amplifiers to tools of death to repositories of ancient knowledge (something like an Atlantian supercomputer).

So which theory will be in the film?

"There's several different kinds of skulls, several different kinds of theories, several myths that are surrounding them," Lucas said, clearly delighted by his secret knowledge. "So, you just have to put all the pieces together, look it up and figure out which one it is. Or just wait until the movie comes out, which is so much easier."

"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" opens May 22.

The only real crystal skulls I am aware of, which the story may be driven by, is this:

Crystal skull - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_Skull)

I hate to use wikipedia but that seems to be the real one.

It will be watchable and while I would bet it'll be better than the young indy tv series and temple of doom, last crusade was really good. George prefers the SE editions of the original Staw wars trilogy too (i prefer the theatrical versions except maybe the cloud city scenes in empire) and he was proud of EP 1 and I disliked that so much I never saw ep 2 in the theater. I will wait to pass judgement but i am leery of it

Are these the same crystal skulls in the Phantom movie?? And ever since SW eps I and II, I don't trust Lucas' opinion.

Well to the all the guys that HAVE said or WILL say that they don't trust Lucas due
to their dislike of his modern STAR WARS decisions---don't get too jaded kids

Lucas helped with story points in this new Indy movie and is helping with other
production tasks...
stuff we know he can handle well enough in a collaborative scenario

Lucas has virtually nothing CRUCIAL to do with this Indy flick----
he didn't write it---and he isn't directing it-----

some other guy is directing this movie--

--oh yeah----

SPEILBERG!

;)

Anyways---all Church Lady like humor aside (not SATAN----SPEILBERG!)

Between HARRISON FORD'S discretion and SPEILBERG'S skill
this new Indy will be really great
the best since RAIDERS????----well, I can see it getting close---who knows---

Anyways----
I have faith in Lucas' opinion of his cronies work
----now if LUCAS was directing....well, lets not even go there!

;)

Yeah, it's been established that the crystal skull is a 19th century German invention, passed off in the 1920s as an ancient Mayan artifact by an unscrupulous American archeologist and a wacked-out art restorer in the 1970s...

... but hey, whoever said the Holy Grail was real?

Hey, Hue. Learn how to spell SPIELBERG before you use it. :) And Mr. SPIELBERG's had his fair share of clinkers the last few years. War of the Worlds, AI, and Minority Report come to mind.

That's embarassing about the spelling! (oops)

And----I thought Minority Report was great

Didn't see the other two-----but my opinion is you can't really count AI
as a "miss" or a "clinker" anyway----cause it was a labor of love to finish a movie
he didn't plan on working on the first place
(and War Of The Worlds got a respectable enough 73% on ROTTEN TOMATOES)

Anyways...

Like I said, between Spielberg and Ford----this movie will be great----mark my words

Then again---I thought TEMPLE OF DOOM was great----so I guess
"great" is somewhat subjective in this case

Seriously, they've been gearing up for this for years----its gonna be reallllly good

Stop the presses, Lucas said what!?! Gee, someone associated with a movie franchise made the stunning claim that the next movie is going to be the best one ever (or at least since the original)?

Now if he came out and admitted that this movie is going to be a stale rehash of the same formulaic bs, with a slightly different treasure, a slightly different feisty female lead, and a slightly different twist on the Jones family dynamic, but that we would be so razzle dazzled by all the new stunts, CGI and other special effects to notice, then I'd be truly impressed.

^^^^^^Stale rehash?

No fan is looking for Lucas and Co. to reinvent the wheel to a proven formula
----and then take away the FX so we could notice that.

It's an Indiana Jones movie and traditional relic quests, "tense" love stories, and "FX and
action" are what help define the genre/franchise

If you want a movie without a spunky female lead, and no twists on
the Jones family dynamic, and no mystic treasure to go after and no FX to enhance
interesting action sequences-----you could go rent MY DINNER WITH ANDRE...

...instead of selling your soul and buying into the INDIANA JONES malarkey :)

Always remember I before E, except after C. Sorry, tho, Steven and Harrison should lock up old George so he can't add ideas from his kids to the movie.

Unfortunately I'm so paranoid I never trust that rule implicitly :)

Lock up George----sell his car----whatever it takes!

Dude...if I had a billion dollars the last thing I'd be thinking about is going
in for unnecessary surgery!

Maybe George is of the same mind? ;)

Its just creepy looking, the only thing that defines his chin is the beard. I guess Jabba neck would be more fitting.

I'm glad Lucas doesn't have too much input. He kind of lost touch with his real fans in my opinion. I was lucky to have seen some of the filming and walked through the sets when they were in New Haven, so I'm more excited than I would normally be. I loved the first 3 and hope this caan come close to the previous films.
