Wildcard Searches

What wildcards can I use within the search engines?

I've tried asterik(?) * (common) and percent % (SQL) and neither seem to work...

It's supposed to accept an asterisk as a wildcard character, but I've found that almost nothing about the search function seems to work as it should. When I need to find something, I usually end up digging for it.
