There are plenty of characters and they appear plentiful. . . . and I'll tell you that sometimes I start to wonder how many of these are being made now in an effort to look vintage. What do you guys think?
I know that this is likely true with some of the Star Wars bootlegs I've seen come out of Mexico.

Oh yah, I'm 100% with you! How much more will we see that will come from Mexico or other countries that made knock-offs. That's all fine and good, especially if you can find these knock-offs in good condition. You are right about one thing, how much of these supposed knock-offs are fake?

Some of these look so bad, who would even care if they are authentic. This one particular example looks like the ultimate "Frankenstein" of other figure lines.. Just horrid by every measure.

If I had been a kid and seen that, I would have been turned off to Captain America for the rest of my life.

True, some of these are so poorly made you have to wonder why they even bothered

The Ledy bootlegs were made for those who could not afford the real thing

Exactly.
I lived in Mexico during the golden years of Lili Ledy...and I can tell you right now...poor kids (which are the majority down there) couldn't afford Lili Ledys...they were high end toys in Mexico (and mostly found in shopping centers in the big cities). Only middle class and rich kids could afford them.
So like Bryan said...bootlegs were a wonderful option for many...and these would be found everywhere, not only in cities, but little rural towns as well.

Very interesting. It has a certain amount of goofy charm :)

Lili Ledy was for the rich and middle class? Wow, didn't know that. I thought these were dirt cheap, so everyone could afford them

That's why bootlegs are extremely popular in Mexico...sold at much cheaper prices, no packaging...and practically sold in the streets.
We are talking the 70s here...many areas of Mexico was still pretty much agricultural and rural (like American Indian reservations))...the poor kids couldn't afford Converse shoes for example...many wore huaraches...especially the indigenous kids...

Yup, when the Ledy SW dolls came out and I coincidentally lived in Mex when it happened, they were only found in department stores.
Short time after we would hit the mercados and I'd see the knockoffs of the SW Ledy dolls for sale and they were cheap looking and felt brittle.
There is still bootlegging of toys by these rural entrepenuaers and I wouldn't be surprise that some old molds are being used from generations of mego boots today.
Mexican bootleg toys are interesting but definitely not worth what they command in ebay unless you don't plan on visiting Mex or you have a connection to an honest collector down there.
They are meant for the underprivileged kids in these rural areas, who might be familiar and have access to the true history of the doll's character. It's just a toy to them.

Are you talking about the 12" figures? I've never seen any bootleg versions of these (just a 12" C-3PO, which Ledy didn't even make), but I would love to see some.

Yes, they were almost 12" size since they shrink when bootlegged. This was back in 1979 in San Luis Potosi and found them in D.F. when we went to stay there.
They exist or existed. I honestly would not collect them let alone the Tusken Raider in thin blue plastic. It was the same as the legit version minus the clothes. The Vader was awful as well as R2 and 3PO.
I recall all this since my brother and I were huge Star Wars fans and collectors. Even the legit Ledy's were a turn off to us. They had pallets of these boxed dolls but I just didn't like them. When we saw the Tusken Raider as a 12" we assumed they released it back in the states as well. Well when we came back to the states we were surprised they didn't release a 12" Raider.
Needless to say our friends didn't believe us when we told them that in Mexico they had a 12" Tusken Raider. I do wish I bought a couple now.

Thanks for the info, I hope that some of those boots turn up someday, I'd just love to see them, awful looking or not. And you saw pallets of boxed Ledy SW? Wow, I could only dream of seeing such a sight! I'm sure your story of seeing 12" Tusken Raiders was very far fetched to your friends. I wouldn't have believed you either. :smiley1:
