    Vintage Toy Stores Part 8

    [CENTER]
It is always a happy time when I gather up enough shots of vintage and (sadly) no longer in business toy stores from yesteryear.
In the latest installment we hop over the the UK for some staggering window displays for Palitoy Action Man (the UK G.I. Joe) then we'll go back stateside to see some toy departments past and get some peaks at Star Wars, Six Million Dollar man, Major Matt Mason and other toys long since past.

And when you're done digging on part 8, check out parts 1 through 7 in our archive, it's a total trip:

The exterior shot of the Woodward and Lothrop is from the Columbia Mall in Columbia, Maryland. "Woodies" was their nick-name. My folks shopped there and the one that was at another mall in Wheaton, but I never remembered a toy department in either of those stores. I wonder if the interior shot is from the large downtown Washington, DC store?

Let the warm sad happiness wash over me.

I wokred at Strawbridge and Clothier's anchor store in Center City Philadelphia during the later 80's. The toy section was long gone by then.

That picture is from around 1970-71, it's possible they just stopped doing toys after that.

I really enjoy these old store pics. It's great to see the toys on the shelves and I find the different store's presentations interesting. I've merchandized a bit over the years and some of the set-ups are great, while others are simply baffling, assuming that few of these shots are candid.
When I was at Sears a while back, they had photo albums of displays ends, etc. going back to the 60s. I did look for toy photos when I had a minute but it seemed to be mainly fashion stuff.

Yeah, my memories of going shopping would be vague from then. That Columbia Mall had a toy store on the lower level for years that wound up closing in the 80's. I wish I remember the name of it, but I remember it had an owl in the logo on the sign (but I don't recall the name having anything to do with that). It was set up with train and doll house stuff in the front corner and then the rest of the "common" toys in the back. I think there is a Victoria's Secret in that spot now.
                              It's all good!
