A Collecting Enigma & A Question For All

(I was going to post this under Mego Buzz, but it can also apply to other things so here it is in General Buzz.)

I don't know how to put this, so let me just say it. I don't really like Superman. Sure I love the George Reeves version, and I like the first 2 Superman films, but overall I really don't like him. It's not that I hate him, he's so invincible that, to me, he's uninteresting. Now the weird thing is, I love Superman action figures. As far as his "look", I think he's awesome. Great colors, simple design, a great overall look. Mego Superman and recently Mattel Superman are two of my favorite action figures. I just don't get it.

The same goes for Iron Man. I love the "look" of Iron Man and I love his action figures, but the character just doesn't appeal to me. Again, loved the movie, but overall, I just don't like him. Rich playboy superhero? Seen it before in Batman which I love, but not Iron Man. I tried to get into the comics at various times and never could. I loved the Secret Wars Iron Man, I still have the original Marvel Legends Iron Man, and now I'm eyeballing the new 3 3/4 inch Iron Man figures, especially the comic versions. And Mego's Iron Man is delightfully awesome to me.

So now let me ask. Does anyone else face this? Do you love something you don't even really like? Not collecting it for investment or to complete a collection, but something you just can't resist? What is it?

For me it's just the opposite:

I really like Superman. He's not my fave, but I do like the old George Reeves show and Chris Reeves' movies, the Superfriends, and even the newer movie was OK. I even bought 3 Superman Power Record albums at Comic Con. But I really have no desire to own a figure. :no:

CAPTAIN AMERICA is more about the look to me than the character too.
STILL... I think that when the new CAP movie comes out, that'll change for
me a bit.
As far as anything else on this... I'm not sure, but you picked the best
example as it applies to me in the context of "visual image vs. character"
with the visual coming out on top.

Yeah I am anxious to see how the new movie will look.
Maybe bring about some new feelings towards the character for me.

I found myself collecting many figures in the past, not because I liked them, but because they were just Mego. Finally woke up and stopped that trend, but I can feel your frustration in enjoying something for all the wrong reasons.

Hey Hector, no offense. Hating Superman isn't what I was getting at. I guess I should have said I was indifferent to the character. I can take him or leave him as far as the character goes, but the "look" of the character really works for me. I realize that Superman is hugely popular and I wasn't trying to get a war going, I was just trying to put into words what I realized the other day. Of all my new Mattels, I like Superman the most and that surprises me. It got me thinking.

I hope we're cool Hector, because I value your opinion and you have always been a great guy. I'm sorry if I offended you.

I have a feeling that the intent of my thread was misunderstood. I was just curious if others found themselves liking something that they really had no logical reason to like if that makes any sense.

It would have been a lot more crazier if you were like "I hate Superman but
can't stop buying action figures of him."
That would be a crazy disorder almost akin to being a supervillain. :grin:

I'm not a big fan of The Phantom, but Cast-a-way did such a great job, that they totally won me over with the figure. Some with Captain Action to some degree... to me the point is that he dressed up as Superman and Spiderman!

I'm not into the character of Spawn either, but the sculpting on those figures and the fact that they single-handed raised the bar across the collectible toy industry in the nineties is quite astonishing. I remember looking at a Mandarin Spawn and just being completely blown away at the level of detail.

Being a Star Wars kid, Star Trek TOS never grabbed me, though I played with the Megos at a friend's house quite often. When EMCE started doing their original figures like Sulu, Chevok, Khan and Gorn, I jumped on board that one and even started getting a few original TOS figures. It's the Movie ones that I really want though. I'd probably be into TNG as well... mostly for The Borg or Q.

Yeah, I can relate. I'm not crazy about KISS -- always thought their music was kind of dumb and Gene Simmons is just... repugnant -- but I like the KISS Megos. I've purchased figures in the past because they were Mego, but that was when I had more of a perception that they were scarce, and so I'd get over-excited when I'd see them in the wild.

But the perfect example for me is McFarlane. I'm not a Spawn fan, either, but I genuinely love a lot of the figures from that series. (Not so much the Spawn character himself, but renditions of ancillary characters, and the Dark Ages stuff... those figures are awesome.) Not a huge Bob and Doug Mckenzie fan, but I am a huge fan of their action figures. I like Austin Powers well enough, but I love the action figures. Akira, X-Files, Movie Maniacs from movies I'm not crazy about... if I had even a lukewarm interest in it, and McFarlane made it, I bought it. Occasionally I did go overboard... anybody interested in Rob Zombie or some Nitro Riders?

I'll chime in here;

Being an artist all my life, I definitely relate to things visually more than anything else. I mean, I read comics and get into the stories and such, but I find myself always being inexorably drawn to a character visually, first. How a character is drawn or presented, is always how I initially judge whether I'll pick up the book or see the movie, what have you... I think by looking at my work, BDE and WF specifically, its obvious that I was very into how I presented Bats and the Man of Steel, visually. Showing them both as the bold, iconic archetypes that they both are. Though drastically different character wise, I thought it was important to show both of them as strong. They both actually looked VERY physically daunting and larger than life... That's what I think all heroes should be.

I think it's possible to like the design of something and not the substance.

For example: hot girl/guy. You can like their looks. But when he/she opens their mouth, snorefest.

You can like the design of a character but dislike the direction creators have taken them in.

(This is widely seen in when a big name writer comes on board and changes everything on the character--John Byrne/Spider-man Chapter One, anyone?)

I personally like the design of Thor. I like his backstory. I like the idea of a god being forced into humility by sharing his place with a handicapped doctor. And then I sit down and read Thor... and I'm done.

I have the same problems with the Silver Surfer, the Fantastic Four and the JLA.

In theory everything seems to be perfect in my mind, and sometimes I'll be able to stick around for a few issues...but ultimately, I'm done.

(I will admit to buying more than a handful of Thor figures in my lifetime, but not enough to be considered a collection. And ultimately they all end up living in a box after a few weeks, in my garage.)

That's a great example! I'm not a Fan of The Phantom, I've never read one Comic Book of Him...but LOVE the Cast-A-Way Figure just because he looks COOL! I missed out on him before...but plan on buying one in the next run.:yes:
