Reminds me of the Billy Ripken card fiasco from the late 80's. Anyone ever hear of that? 1989 Fleer cards were released and it was discovered that Billy Ripken's photo had him with a bat lying on his shoulder and the bottom of the handle was clearly visible because of the angle of the bat. Written very clearly in marker there was "F*** Face". They tried to recall the cards but many were already in the hands of collectors (and kids). The card was selling for quite a bit back then. It's pretty unbelievable that it made it past the proofers and printer without getting caught. Here's one in an ebay auction.

I work for a division of the company that owns Penguin Publishers and we just recently let go of our entire proofreading department. Karma's a beotch, ain't it?

As a professional writer, I've said it a thousand times and I'll say it again: spell-check is not the same as proofreading.

A great example is this:

"The red pen is my friend."

Now, delete the space between "pen" and "is" and you'll have written a sentence that spell-check will just glide right over.

I am a terrible typist but it will bypass grammer that is poor and never mind when someone types "from" instead or "form" since they are both correctly spelled words
