UPS hiring 25,000 new drivers. Average salary: $74,000 a year
yeah they are becoming major players here too, and affordable now, they have taken over 2 large courier firms here and are becoming more hight st friendly and easy on the pocket
we have used them a few times this year already... as where before we never would have lol
Their service is still pretty weak here. They don't even deliver it to your door, just drop it off at a local business or P.O.
There are couriers here but prices are prohibitive. When I lived in the states everyone used UPS all the time, here it's mostly for businesses though I wish it would change.
Gotta say if you're young enough I highly suggest looking into the possibility if you need a job change. I have worked closely with pretty much every aspect of UPS for the past 20+ years and in hindsight I would do it if given the chance again. Not sure if it's still the same as it was but you needed to take temp jobs for a while before they would make you permanent. It was always a chance I was not in a position to make but my current driver is reaching his 20 year anniversary and has a fairly sweet route. Has an area with limited residential and a large amount of warehouse and commercial deliveries. His pickups are all pretty much dock level and multiple packages vs 1 or 2. It's a hussle job and I'm sure in the near future they'll be instituting the trackable gps beacons in their trucks which is pretty much like Big Brother always following you around but they are paying you to do a job so I don't really see the issue. I hear the union has been blocking this action or the notion of it for a while. Many of the smaller trucking companies are already using it to track their drivers routes and how much downtime they experience waiting to make deliveries at docks and such. Little FYI UPS has more planes than some small airlines but has never had a crash. They are also one of the most technologically advanced companies in business today.
Been there done that. 1988-1991. I guess, I'd have 22 years under my belt if I'd have stayed there. Oh well.
I think the average wage for drivers was like $20/hr back then. I know it's gone up. Last I heard was around $25-26/hr. But that was a few years ago, talking to one my old comrades who stuck it out. Can you lift 70lb. over your head? I do remember management having a rather high turnover and they were refered to by the hourly guys as "pricks". But I'm sure that isn't unique to UPS now.
