Tell me a story of your youth when you saw something that you passed up as a kid and wished you didn't and today sells for mucho $$$$$$!!!!


Location: Osco Drugs Circa: 1977 Age: 4 years

I loved the boxed WGSH when I was a kid. I hated the carded ones because that's all I ever saw in Zayers, Bradlees, CVS, and Osco Drugs in my town of Waltham, Mass. One day my mom took me to Mr. Big Toyland on Moody St. (which was very famous but I never knew it at the time) and I saw a boxed 8" Hulk that I wanted so badly. The price was high at the time as it was selling for 8.00 (this store was infamous for overpricing it's items). My mom thought they were rude and told me I couldn't have the figure so when we left and I was crushed. She made a pit stop at the Osco Drugs on the other side of town and as I ran down the toy isle I can remember as clear as day searching through all the carded Mego's to find a Hulk. There were 2 Iron man's, a few Thor's, Lizard's, Green Goblin's, Green Arrow's, and Conan's (as well as the typical one's like Superman, Batman, and such) and I can also remember holding the Thor and Conan figures and being amazed by their wild hair. This was the first time I ever saw these heroes and villains in toy form. There was unfortunately no Hulk (go figure). So I ended up getting a carded Spider-man and Batman for 2.00 bucks each. I would never see any of those carded Mego's again until later on in life as they were selling for so much. Everytime I see those famous carded figures from the 1975 WGSH wave, I think of this day.:googly: All those prized figures were available right in front of me and I touched them fresh from the case.

To this day I can't believe I passed up on all that gold!! I will never forget that day. But I still gotta thank my mom for not taking crap from the owners of Mr. Big and giving me some supa-dupa fun!!!

I hear yah. I actually got the Eternia playset as a kid. Loved it!! Those blasted rails were so fragile though. Mom ended up giving my entire He-man collection to my cousins in another country. I had everything.

BTW, love your avatar of the Ultimate Warrior. WWF Wrestlefest is the best wrestling game ever made!! I still play it on my PC every few days. I'm usually the Ultimate Warrior and Hogan but since I have the codes to be the Road Warriors I'm always them now!:smile: Must of spent a fortune as a little kid in quarters on that blasted game.

I don't know the exact year, other than an time frame which would around 1977 or 1978, so I was six or seven.

The place was Toys R' Us in Paramus NJ. I absolutely, positively saw a carded Riddler. I remember thinking "His belt is a purple Batman belt". That stuck with me for some reason.

I remember going into Toys R' us with my mother in 1978. We came along an entire end-cap of KISS figures. I was a huge fan of KISS and being also a young kid, I had to have them. But of course, my mother would not buy them for me. Another thing that I remember was on the top shelf of the end-cap had a display of the KISS figures. There was a cardboard stage displaying the 4 figures. Now I have never since seen the cardboard stage display. But I do wonder how much that thing is worth today?:grin:

I only ever saw one Ahi Creature from the Black Lagoon in the wild, at the Kiddie City in King of Prussia, Pa. at some point in the 70s. I forget why, but we didn't buy it that day. So I 'hid' it on the peg behind two Draculas. But when we came back some days later intending to buy, it was gone. That was a bummer, the Creech was my favorite monster.

I remember seeing boxed FF in a store in Madison, WI on our way to see 'Return of the Jedi' in '83, but at that point I had turned 20 and it seemed a bit too adolescent.., even for me.

I was also trying to win my best friend's younger sister for a few years by then.

I had mentioned in another thread recently that I couldn't convince my mom to "pull the trigger" on getting the Space 1999 Eagle. The only problem though is that if I had gotten it, I would have played with it until it fell apart.

Passed up Aquaman VS the Great white Shark for some tarzan toys, and a Spock.

Turned down four Megos for a Wicket W. Warrick figure and Duke from G.I.Joe. I can still remember turning the aisle and seeing those megos there (on sale even) and then my cousin and brother convincing me to get the other two figures.

I regretted it as soon as I hit the car, but didn't ever say anything...

HOLY MOLY, I also passed on the Aquaman VS the Great White Shark!!! I saw it in a clearance bin at a Zayers probably during the late 70's or early 80's (not too clear on that)!! It was thrown together with a bunch of other misfit toys. I barley noticed it because I didn't really care about Aquaman or Jaws at the time...I wanted Hulk!! What a mistake that was!!!

I actually had a Aquaman vs Great White Shark set, but it was lost to the annals of time. I do remember playing with it in the bathtub! :)

My "moment in time" was a Romulan. I'd been looking all over for one and finally found one in a Jc Pennys or Sears, I think, and my mother wouldn't but it for me. I never saw another one as a kid!

You know what's funny about this is that I used to do that too. When my mom wouldn't get me something I would hide the toy behind other toys and hopefully it wouldn't sell until I could get back to it. I probably forgot about a bunch of things that were quickly put back in their proper place and sold off. Funny how you never think of those things when your a kid. Good stuff.

Ironically, I was in Toys R' Us one time and desperately wanted a Mego Conan but couldn't find one. My mother told me to look behind the other figures in case someone had hidden one and, sure enough, I found a Conan!

I am sure I have told these stories here before but I will summarize briefly the big three for me.

1: In the eighties a bin of hundreds of carded megos at one of those corner stores that would be comparable to dollar stores today. They were 1.99 each and I wanted to buy all of them. Because I did not have enough money to buy all of them, I decided not to buy any.

2: The original Raiders figures red tagged at the Bay. Very cheap. Considered buying a ton of them, bought none.

3: The Kenner 18" figures red tagged again at the Bay. Very cheap. Same story. Wanted to buy them all. Bought none.

I have other stories about selling sports cards pre-ebay and getting a fraction of what I would have received had I waited until ebay existed.

These things used to kind of haunt me a little. They still do if I really dwell on them. So I don't.

That's funny about the early 80's and Mego. I remember in a Toys R Us a wall full of carded Hulk's. I assumed there must have been close to 40 of them on clearance racks. I loved the Hulk but never even picked one up. I assumed they would always be there because there were so many of them. I bet Mark Huckabone bought them all in one swoop.

I got two for you,
First: Xmas shopping with my mom and sister at Toys R Us 1978 or 79. We turned the corner and there was an end cap of Teen Titans. I was just too old to care but I remember thinking it was funny that that were so small. I think one did make it into the cart for an isle or two though.
Second: Star Trek Picard 1701 figure. My girlfriend at the time collected the Next Generation figures. I was at a Hills dept. Store while a new box was being pegged. I picked up 3 of the new ones for her and saw the 1701 Picard and thought, she has like 6 or 7 Picards all ready. At the time I didn't know it was limited to a 1701 figure run. within a month the book price was $1000 + but I don't think it's worth much anymore. Limiting figures really hurt the line.

1990, My Son Was 4 Yrs Old. He Wanted A Sesame Street Ernie On A Tractor. I Found It At Lionel, And Saw About 50 Mego Fantastic 4 Figs For 1.99 Each. I Said I Used To Have Those , Then Paid For Ernie. What A Idiot.
