New Brave and Bold: Old School Cool

I'm catching up on some of my comic reading, and I just read the last 3 chapters of the first story 6-issue arc from Waid and Perez's Brave and the Bold. I know a lot of you guys pine for the days when a 6 issue comic story had 6 issues worth of actual story. Look no further. Honestly, DC could have published this same story in 1982 and you wouldn't have blinked. Free of all the angst and with only a hint of the crossover-itis affecting the comic industry. A truly fun, entertaining read. Waid manages to pull in such diseparate characters as Batman, Green Lantern, the new Blue Beetle, Destiny, Adam Strange, Lobo, Supergirl, the new LOSH and some surprise guests who make a return appearance in their classic form (at least ONE good thing to come from Superboy Prime's punches, apparently!). All the characters have their own voice without having to be morally corrupt or ticked off the whole time (well, except for Lobo). I wish more writers held their characters in such high regard as Waid.

Perez is the greatest living, working comic artist. There I said it. Now argue with me. And don't even say Jim Lee. Yeah Bat, I'm talking to you.

But seriously, other than a nod to the current Rann/Thanagar war, this has that great late Bronze Age flavor I know most of us here prefer. Pick up the back issues or wait for the trade, but give this a try. It's more than worth it!!!

I'm with ya on this Chris! Besides the slowness of the shipping on some of the issues, I have nothing but high praise for this revival. A true classic that spans the vast regions of the DC Universe, utilizing all of the characters you mentioned (as well as those you didn't...wink, wink) while still being able to tell a decent coherent tale without over-confusing the reader. Mark Waid is a fanboy-writer for fanboys and George Perez is a master with the pencil and it's always a treat to drool over his pages and see how much he crams in without making it look messy (which makes me overlook the book's lateness problems, somewhat).

I'm looking forward to upcoming issues (not sure if they're stand-alone stories or arcs) featuring Wonder Woman/Power Girl and The Flash/Doom Patrol (which reminds me of the early Silver Age pre-Batman Brave and the Bold).

    Good stuff!

i have been enjoying B&B very much as well. while maybe(maybe!) the opening story went on a bit long, it did cover so much ground that i can see it filling so many issues.

i would love to see some 1 or 2 issue stories, and as much as i love Bats, i'm glad future tram-ups are more off-beat, like Flash/Doom Patrol and WW/Power Girl.

      fun, fun comics.
