great film but good luck finding an original copy of it. I ended up buying a bootleg copy on dvd.
This film is right up there with Gargoyles another classic made for tv film. Some people don't know this but Felix Silla the guy who played Twiki in Buck Rogers was one of the little "gremlins" in Don't be afraid of the dark.
Also The lead female for that film was none other then Kim Darby who played "Miri" in the classic Star Trek episode of the same name. She had a crush on the "Grup" James T. Kirk.

                Hmmmm....

"Scream" showed this one last year; and it was a digitally remastered version, so I'm willing to be SOMEONE released it in disk. Or is planning to. It's a nifty film, and I hadn't seen it since I was a little kid.

"Gargoyles" was a good one too; but I only remember it being shown on tv once. I DID see it on VHS a LONG ways back, but I didin't have the money to buy a copy, and I haven't seen it since.

                  Somewhere i have this!

This is a must see classic 1970's made for TV horror. I believe i still have this on DVD but its in storage, i cant get to it for a few more weeks, i'm healing from a broken leg, so i cant move around the boxes where i believe this might be packed. When i do get to it ( next month or so) I could make copies for those who might want to watch it. I cant remember where i bought it though, i believe a flea market in Vegas.

Took me 15 years to find a decent copy of this film.

Lorimar put it out on VHS in the early 80's. On ebay you'll sometimes find old rentals, and you'll pay BIG money for it too.

Even more rare is finding a copy on Beta or 3/4 tape (from TV stations that broadcast the movie in the 70's)

I have a copy in a different format, and it's fantastic quality.

This movie has never been released on DVD and any you see are on DVD-r.

                        DVD-R I believe

When i picked this up ( I believe a Flea market) the guy said a real dvd, but its actually a dvd-r copy , i'll try to find it when my leg heals. From what i remember is that its a excellent quality copy though.

Cripes! That movie scared the bejeesus out of me as a kid and had to sleep with the lights on for years! It probably is tame by todays standards but man! It spooked me out for years!!!

                            "Sally....Sally....."

                            *shudder*

When I was a kid I watched television every day until I was absolutely saturated with popular culture. Although I was an athletic youth, I ran home each day after school to catch the afternoon movie on Detroit's ABC affiliate on Channel 7. I have never forgotten seeing the film Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, about a young couple who move into the large rambling home once owned by the woman's grandmother. Something sinister once lurked the basement, but had been sealed within the fireplace by bricks stacked four deep -- the door giving onto the ash bin had been bolted shut. Evil subdued.

However, the first thing that happens when the young couple take over the house, is the wife wants to turn this grungy dank room into her home office. And she just has to have that damned fireplace cleared out and working. An aged handy man warns her against "meddling with things you don't understand," but she doesn't heed him.

Remember, there would be no such thing as horror movies if there weren't stupid people.

Sally, the wife, managed to undo the bolt on the ash bin door. That's all the evil needs to be unleashed through the house in the form of tiny raisin-headed ghouls who look like Smurfs gone bad.

The movie hit me like a piledriver when I was eight years old. It scared the absolute ****e out of me. Last night I borrowed this film from a friend, seeking to demystify it. I'm just after watching the film for the first time in twenty five years, and I have to say that this cheesy little horror knock-off still does the job. I don't think it'll keep me up tonight as it had when I was a kid, but the story's simplicity, particularly its makeshift special effects, came off quite effectively.

I've never seen the film on the shelf in a video shop. But if you do come across and are looking for a nostalgic thrill, I think Don't Be Afraid of the Dark is what you're looking for.

This movie also scared the scrappy-doo out of me as a kid. I thoughit was soo good I bought it on DVD a few years ago. Hard to believe this type of fright movie was on regular TV. Definately a classic horror movie. I still remember those whispering lidemons saying " SALLY, SALLY".
