View Full Version : proto-type soldier ape on Ebay? I don't know.

I know this guy is a big POTA collector so I would think he would mention in his description that this is a rare proto-type soldier ape if it indeed was but, there is no mention so I think it is a soldier ape with his face painted in "skin tone". What do you all think???

Does anyone know this seller or if he's a member here???

Looks like a repaint, the skin would match Galen's otherwise.

OK, I asked the seller about the soldier ape's face and asked if it had been "repainted". This is his reply:
I have had a few white face dolls come my way in last 30 years and the best I can tell it does not seem to be painted. If it is they did a great job. I have 4 white face dolls in my personal collection and they all look the same as this one.

ok....4 of these in his personal collection??? Something's rotten in Denmark.

Ask him to take a pic with the head pulled away from the neck socket a bit so that you can see the exposed neck plug (although I'd be surprised if he complied). I doubt if someone would have painted the neck plug, so if it's legit, the face should be the same colour as the plug (then again, I guess that could be painted too, if this is a completely intentional scam).

If it was original I'm sure he'd be promoting it a little better then that, seems like Bull crap to me

its probally a repaint but i wouldnt mind owning it anyways as it looks cool. to me this is like a reproduction of an alter geo if you cant afford the real thing buy a custom one.

I agreed that. I don't care if it's original or not, I would buy it. So, that'll help me to save buck$ if it's repainted face 'cuz I can't afford to buy if it's original Prototype molded light tan face. I looked up this Mego Museum Gallery, there's no lightest color face but they have original prototype tan face molded as the same Corney's face color but we'll see if it's original light face color. I think there's have only 2 different prototype color face Soldier Apes with Maroon tunic with gloves.
I knew if it's original Maroon outfit with gloves will go up higher on eBay but we'll see and happen if it's fair price or not on near bid end before snipe it.
I noticed the lighter skin face one has the wrong blue T-1 Soldier Ape outfit with gloves. It's supposed to be with Maroon tunic outfit with gloves seen on the back of POTA Treehouse playset box.
If it's a repaint the neck plug will show it. Even if he painted the neck plug as well the paint would chip once you pushed the plug into the neck hole.
If he really claims these are real and he has 4 of them ask him to join the Museum and make his case here for all to see, with lots of pics and info on where he got them

It`s not the first time he`s listed a soldier like this and has been subject of discussion on the forum before. I recall the outcome of that been he was hoping to reel in somebody expecting a great deal in a semi hidden auction.

I'm sure its a fake......so everyone should let me win the auction, and I'll take pics of the neck plug to prove it.

We'll I emailed the seller yesterday about the neck-plug. Not to take a pic of it.....just to tell me if it was the same color as the face. As expected, no response. I guess it's safe to say.....another mystery solved. As English Paul stated, he was hoping to reel in somebody expecting a great deal on a semi-hidden auction. Sad.

If the bid stays low enough it would still be a decent deal. Aquahawxx has the lead right now. Clothing looks like it's in pretty good shape. Maybe I'll put a bid in for it myself.

The seller is in Scottsdale, AZ, one town over from me. Tell them I'd be happy to verify the authenticity in person. Somehow I doubt they will accept the invitation.

Well, $104.50 final price. Thats a little more that it should've went for, for a soldier ape with painted face.

Yeah, me too! Someday I'll finding complete and all original regular T-1 Maroon Soldier Ape then I'll take his head off and get repro head with painted face from Dave Mc. Repro head with face painted is LOT cheaper than original prototype head, so It'll help me to saving alot of buck$! I'll display him next to the POTA Treehouse with it's original big U.S box! :2thumbsup:

Another obvious soldier ape with painted face. This guy is also a big POTA collector. This stuff is starting to get out of control. I hope some other poor sucker doesn't fall victim to this scam.

Well at least this guy responded to me when I sent in a question about it, though his response contains one line that always fires off my Auction Crap Detector - "I'm not an expert on these items...." I find that almost universally to be questionable seller code for "plausable deniability for fraud".
Dear darthshamus,
I did not paint the figure, however, I got it with some other POTA figures a while back. I can not tell if it is painted or originally that color from the factory. I am not an expert on these items. I did not know the face was supposed to be a different color. I would suggest that you do not bid if you do not want to take a chance. I am sorry I do not have a definative answer for you.

Here's what the seller wrote back to me about the face. I asked him if the neck plug was the same color as the face:
Dear skullface13,
I can not tell. I do not collect these figures. I got it in a lot of Megos a while back. I did not remove the head. I do not want to because I do not want to break it.

I bid on alot of ape figures and this Seller DOES collect POTA figures. He probably saw how well the other scammer....I mean seller did on his auction and figured he'd give it a try.

Very predictable answers. Playing dumb and claiming to know nothing about what one is selling seems to be the excuse many ebay sellers use to intentionally mislead people or try to rip them off. Pathetic. And I just knew the "I don't want to risk breaking the head" excuse was coming too. :smiley1:

Well, they did in the sense that they paid a high price for a defaced Soldier Ape...
Had it been an actual mint/complete Soldier (just a standard issue) the price wouldn't have been too bad... However, with that "pancake makeup" they added, that lowered it's mintiness, and therefore it's value...
