View Full Version : Who here is an APES fan?

I'm wondering who considers themselves to be an APES fan?

I am not talking about the folks who might say "Oh yeah, I used to like that as a kid", or "Sure, I seen the movies after school", etc. Also excluding the folks who say the highly over-quoted "Take your stinking paws of me you damn dirty ape" line, which basically "everyone" knows.

I am not thinking that owning all of the MEGO APES would make you one, as there are many who own "every" MEGO just to be completists. I also do not think that just because you hoard MEGOs that it makes you one either, as there are people in all areas of collecting that become "obsessed" for awhile, then lose interest after some time.

What I'm getting at is who here would consider themselves at, or near, the level of the die-hard TREK fans for example. (No, not the stereo-typed geek in the basement dressed as a Vulcan). People who are very hard-core, not obsessed though.

I'm not a fan at all---but I feel for the real hardcore ape fan(s)
who is yearning to reply in this thread but won't do so
due to the fact that he/she is too afraid that they may be "overqualified"
(as quantified by the "obsessed geek/Vulcan" limit that apes3978 pointed
out as over-the-top in the first post) :)

C'mon apes3978---- let the uber-nerds post too! :)

I am a hardcore Ape fan. I loved the movies and tv series as a kid and still do. I even have a few t-shirts. I remember seeing the trailer on TV when I was a kid and being shocked when I saw the scene with the apes on horses. I also remember begging my mother to see the movies. My first MEGO was Cornelius and I remember wondering "why is he wearing leotards". :googly:

Well let's see....

I have all the movies, and watch them when they're on TV anyway.
I recorded the series when the Sci-Fi channel aired them.
I recorded Behind the POTA w/ Roddy (RIP) McDowall.
I have the book & record sets from the movies and the series.
I have the cereal bowl and cup (and use them).
I got a kid I used to babysit into the apes (and even gave him and Astronaut and a video tape I made for his birthday).
I have all of the figures, (but not all the soldiers), and the villiage and prison chair.
I sponsored the Burke card for MM.

Does that qualify?

I will admit, I am a Trekkie and will probably always love that more than the apes, but I was always be an apes fan.:ape:

I've got::ape:
Carded Zira, Burke Zaius figures
Loose Cornelius & Urko
got some POTA's comics
I've got the movies (but not the ape head version)
I've got some books
and one apes colouring book
I have the soundtrack (love it)
a full set of the trading cards
I'm hoping that I can get my paws on some Museum Cards
Kubrick toys
I've got the Go Ape poster
My favorite movie is Beneath The Planet Of The Apes (Mutant Humans)
I'd love a Lawgiver Statue in my garden
and POTA costume
I haven't watched all of the TV Series
I've never seen the cartoon (not sure I'd want to)
I even bought the Tim Burton remake on DVD (hated it though)
I've No recent toys, No Mugs, No T-Shirts
I wouldn't find an ape attractive enough to kiss.
But you could say I was a fan.

I should have clarified that, and now hopefully I did...

Well, I can say I love Apes as part of my overall love of most everything of 70's Kid pop culture.

As a kid, Ape movies on TV were events and I always watched them. Never knew about the TV show and caught the cartoon by mistake around the end of it's run.

I did want Ape toys but I didn't have much lobbying power for toys and choose toys from my first love, Star Trek most of the time. Also, I only got to see toys in department stores and drug stores (never really got to go to toy stores) and they never seemed to have that much in the way of Apes at least when I looked.

Getting the collecting Megos in the 80's fired my up for Apes as I was able to find the Mego toys and rejoice in getting stuff that slipped thorugh my fingers as a child.

In the 80's I recorded the movies, the TV movies (compilations of two TV show episodes) and I got up at 7:30 am Saturday morning to tape the animated Apes cartoons off of WPIX without the commercials.

One of the sets I got when I got my DVD player was the Planet Of The Apes movie set and when they did an upgrade years later I bought that too (in the Ape head).

I'm short of being a hard core fan (collecting ape stuff doesn't go much beyond Megos and the videos) but I am more than a fair weather fan as well.

I'm a big fan, but not anything similiar to a Trekkie. I own all the Pota movies on DVD, also behind the POTA, the toons & the TV series. I have some of the ape megos, but due to a lack of funds i do not own many i'm searching for.

I did not like the POTA remake at all. I hope that we will get a cool old school style apes film in our life time. I also wish they would do the apes re-issues like they did for star trek.

I'm still not happy that they never gave us a finale to the TV series, the show just sort of stopped.

While I agree with you that it would have been cool if there had been some type of closure for the TV series, in all fairness, I don't think any show that was cancelled half-way thru it's first (and only) season ever had any type of "final episode"...

I'm always keeping my fingers crossed that maybe Fox will wake up and see that the POTA means tons of Moola $$$ and gives us either a new movie, but not a sequel to the crappy re-make or i would love to see a cool sci-Fi channel TV series.

And talking about the original not having a finale , I would like to see someone make up a finale to that show in comic book format or a cartoon.

Actually, there is one sort of finale done in a comic, drawn by excellent APES artist Neil Foster and written by Michael Whitty... It's titled "GOING HOME"... If nothing else, the artwork will blow you away (and ABMAC can vouche for me on that one). If you join up with the potaDG, they will be able to tell you all about it:

http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/PotaDG/

There was also one other fan created comic involving a finale for the TV series, but it's name escapes me... The art is top-notch, but the story leaves a lot to be desired... He tried to involve too many elements from the films and TV series and really ended up with a mangled mess that made no real sense... I am sure that it can still be seen at the TV series websight:

POTA is one of my absolute favorites. One of the finest sci fi franchises, which also happens to have the worst continuity of any franchise. (changing years: 3978 in the first movie 3955 in the second which takes place afterward, Why was Brent sent to find Taylor after they lost contact? They should lose contact if the mission was to prove that time travelled faster close to light than on earth)
Whoops! Almost got carried away. My first MEGO was the Soldier Ape. I remember specifically one time when I got in trouble and had to stay in at recess in 2nd grade, thinking over and over "Planet of the Apes is more important than school."
Favorite sci fi franchise EVER!

Its too bad they screwed up the time thing in the Ape movies. And even though i still enjoy watching " Battle for the POTA" I would have liked to see a much bigger budget, but they did what they could!

But with the name alone i still cant believe there isnt a sci-fi show based on the POTA. Or even a new Cartoon! Or straight to DVD toons? It has to sell! I did ot enjoy the 2001 POTA, they should have went with the old style ape look and continued with Ceasar after battle!

I consider myself a huge apes fan.

The first film is my favorite movie all time. I have the films and tv series on dvd. Boy, are there some silly tv episodes : ) I have a side-show Cornelius proudly displayed on my desk, next to my computer. I saw, but despise the remake by Tim Burton. I read and enjoyed the original novel by Pierre Boulle. Also, I live by the motto, ape must never kill ape.

Lastly, its the ONLY complete mego line I own.

According to the "Behind the POA" documentary, the formula for sequel budgets then was opposite what it is today. They expected "Beneath" to make half the money the first one did so they allotted half the amount of money that they did for the first one, as opposed to nowdays where they figure that they need to spend more on sequels. They continued with the same type of cuts throughout the 5 movies.
Return (the cartoon series) was really low budget. There were usually cutaways when someone was speaking. There are more still frames in that cartoon than any I have seen. Still, in spite of all that, Apes is my favorite franchise. I don't think any ape movie will be as effective now because POTA at its best is an even mix of action and social commentary, and every social issue that works in "ape" format has been addressed. That said, a pure action apes movie needs a true action\blockbuster director. Spielberg, Emmerich, Bryan Singer, or Ridley Scott. It might be good then.

Not entirely true... Ted Post said on there that the BENEATH budget was cut due to a lot of nervous "money people" at FOX... They were slashing the budgets on all films, not just BENEATH, because a bunch of "big budget" films failed to live up to their expectations.

As far as the rest of the sequels, they were lower budgeted more in the way you mentioned above, and that was basically said by Frank Capra Jr. when talking about ESCAPE (I think), he said something like "Because # 2 didn't quite do the business that #1 did, then it would follow that # 3 would probably not do the business that # 2 did..." etc...

The cartoon's pacing is slow. <music cue> Painfully <music cue> slow.

The stories are often dumb; they haphazardly mix and mangle elements from Planet, Beneath, and the TV series; the animation is wooden; and the main villain (inexplicably named "Urko") sounds like Fred Flintstone.

But hey, it's official Apes product, and it's worth watching just to hear "I'm Going Humanoid Over You" again. I like to watch it, but only if there are no distractions.

Fake Fred Flinstone, it's not Allan Reed doing the voice it's (Canadian!) Henry Corden.

I find the show charming in it's attempt to revise the Ape legend and tell the story in it's own way. I'm curious as to why it's done.

It *is* slowly paced, I can't deny it but my five year old absolutely loves it and requests it often. There aren't too many Ape fans in his demographic....

The cartoon presents some things that were conspicuously missing from the movies and the live-action series:
Judy, the female astronaut, survives the landing and is generally treated as an equal by her male companions.
The degenerate humans (called humanoids in the cartoon) are shown to be more than dumb animals.
Non-humanoid mutant lifeforms are explored beyond the banana/orange oper hybrid.
It's made clear that Ape technology is largely copied from Human artifacts.
The gorillas' position in the Ape hierarchy is clearly defined.

All of these make it a thought-provoking series, even though it's obviously aimed at kids.

The three novels based on the cartoon were aimed at adults, and they're pretty good, also.

I used to catch parts of eps when this aired on the Sci-Fi Channel (at 4am!), and decided I wanted to see more, so I bought a video of the first few eps, and I hated it. Probably b/c it was more like Pierre Boulle's concept and less like the movies or TV show. I actually did like the animation, very vintage comic-book like.

BTW...if anyone wants my tape of the cartoons, they can have it, free of charge.

Probably b/c it was more like Pierre Boulle's concept and less like the movies or TV show. I actually did like the animation, very vintage comic-book like.

Actually, the first movie is more like Boulle's book in that humans are animals (albeit dressed in rags due to censorship issues in 1968). As Ant pointed out, in the RETURN series, the "humanoids" are semi-articulate, which is something I don't like... I can't get past Nova's "Ahoya" gibberish. That does get annoying... I'll only let their semi-articulation slide if they're trying to say that the "humanoids" hadn't totally devolved yet :yeah:

The RETURN series is like the Boulle book only in that the apes have technology, but the series does seem to take it's cue more from PLANET and BENEATH.

I like most of the storyline that the RETURN series set up, but I do not care for the way it was executed. Anything having to do with flying lizards, giant spiders, and that stupid Ice Ape should all have been eliminated. I would have preferred no Mutants either, but if they had to have them, they should have stuck more with the BENEATH style mutants and not those lasers shooting from their eyes "Underdwellers". Truthfully, I would have preferred that they would have stuck with the "horse and buggy" society from PLANET, but there's no changing any of that now...

What I think might have been even better would have been if they continued the TV series in animated form. Even if they wouldn't have been as lucky as the STAR TREK cartoon where most everyone reprised their roles, I think it would have been cool to have a continuation of the TV series. They could have had the fugitives end up in places and situations that would not have been possible on the regular TV show due to limited budget. For instance POWER records did that story called "VOLCANO", and a story like that would have worked perfectly in an animated show. (Though I think it would have been even better as "live action", but I'd dread seeing the stock footage of an exploding volcano cut into the rest of the film, I'm sure it would have been extrememly obvious.)

I love the films Planet and Beneath are two of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made...I also love conquest which i feel is very under-rated. The Tv series enthralled me as a kid as did the marvel comic reprints (uk versionsblack and white but a4 sized).
What I feel makes me a fan is my belief that one day I will possess an army of shaved evil monkeys/apes......thems good dreams.

I am also a Planet of the Apes fan. My most fanatical years were in highschool, then it subsided a bit but now it's back in full force! Even though it seemed like it subsided, it never really did--I always wore ape green socks inside my boots as much as possible--and still do. I wake up most happy if I have dreamed anything Planet of the Apes related--does that count?
