What's the story on the Star Trek cameo art anyway?

The Klingon doesn't look anything like the figure or like any other Klingon. Spock seems to have a Gold Key comic book influence (eyebrows and ears).

Does anyone know for sure if the art was done for Mego or if it came from somewhere else as I have seen the cameo art on a book and a spoon set.

I believe the art was done either for or by Mego, and used by others. I don't think I have seen anything like it that predated Mego card art.
