I work at a underground station and yesterday two members of staff came to my station and saw my copy of John Bonavita's Mego book, both looked inside saying that they haden't heard of Mego and then both said
"I had that one, and that one and..."
"Did Mego make all of these ?"
Then it turned out that both were secret toy collectors one collected Action Man the other Star Wars. They said that they didn't tell anyone that they collected toys, like it is a guilty secret. I have had Star Wars and Black Hole figures standing at the window whilst I was selling tickets and Men and Women in their 30's / 40's have quite often said that they have some of them...in their packets. So my Mission is to promote Mego to staff and customers alike.
Also today whilst writing this another member of staff saw the book and she to is a toy collector yet she had never heard of Mego but has a black knight in it's packet.
So maybe we should all bring a Mego to work (show and tell)

I was secretive at work until about 5,000 mego cards arrived there one day. The printer had taped the cards to the top of the box and everyone there got a gander....

EVERYONE I work with knows about my plastic predilection. Because I have a small, apartment mailbox, I have my packages delivered to work. I don't even try to hide my Megos when I open a package in the office. Its even got to the point where the receptionist is pretty good at sperating the video and dvd resume packages I get with the much more important goodies I get from eBay and you guys.
On a side note, a few weeks back a steam pipe exploded here in NY, ripping open a huge hole in the street during rush hour. Needless to say, we went into breaking coverage mode and did continuing coverage (at first we didn't know what exploded on a midtown street). After about an hour of running around the newsroom, someone mentioned to me it was not a terrorist attack and that I could feel safe enough to put down my little doll. I had forgotten I was taking a Conan, axe and all, out of a box in my office when the explosion occurred. I went into the newsroom with it and got caught up in the action. :embarassed:

I don't "hide" it anymore either. I don't constantly talk about it, but I don't hide it. Most people that notice my Megos in my office think they are cool, even if they want to play "too cool" to collect themselves.

People at work know about my Megos because I talk about them. I talk about "The guys at the Museum" all the time (and that includes those of the female persuasion as well) when making conversation. People that don't know me probably think I hang around in a Museum when I'm off work. Actually, I do! Just not the kind they most likely think about when they hear me say "The Museum". I'm not ashamed of my toys at all. I even tend to use words like "Mego-Sized" and "Mego-ish" when shopping for compatible modern stuff at stores. I wonder what people think in a toy store when they hear me say "That's totally Mego-sized" or "I bet that would work with my Megos" or even "That's totally Mego-y complete".

Because I work w/ kids, I get to actively use my collection at work. There used to be a kid in my class named Jackson, so he became Action Jackson. I even got him started collecting AJs. My kids have seen my AJs, Star Treks and my Apes. I also babysit some of the kids, and their parents love my toy room. "Wow, I had that! I haven't seen that in years!"
Yeah, it's good to be the program director, and to work w/ kids. I can regress everyday and it's totally acceptable!

Just about everyone at my work knows about my Toy Collecting. Since most of my Toys are Superman and I have a different Superman shirt for every day of the week. (I wear them proudly) When some one new starts they introduce me saying this is Michael or you can just call him Superman like everyone else.
Great story.

People at my work know about my Megos. They can't miss them. There are now 89 action figures (90% mego & megolike). I've incorporated them into my work as well (I'm a college English prof, but the details are a bit complicated).
Not only do my colleagues and students love them, but some of the faculty and staff have also begun bringing in their own toys and action figures to adorn their desks and shelves. Actually, some folks had stuff up long before my office exploded with action!
The more you come "out of the closet," the more it will encourage others to do the same!

People at work know about my not so dirty...not so secret.
Upside, I no longer fear "secret santa". I know I'm not getting perfume, makeup or a blouse. I'm getting a Superman toy. That makes it all worth while my friends.

Glad to see that your finally out of closet James:smiley1:. Actually James' office looks great. I'd be afraid my students would steal or destroy my stuff.

A few people know about it but I don't really talk about it much unless they are interested. Most people know I collect a lot of stuff because I also have my purchases sent to work so I know it arrives safe and sound but only a couple of time have people asked "what's in all those packages you're receiving"
The only think I have in my office is a wool Redskins pennant but is more of a retro style pennant and not one of my vintage ones for fear of having it nicked.
Even though I live in the heart of Redskins country, there are a ton of Ravens, Cowboys, Eagles, and especially Pittsburgh Steelers fans around here and I am almost always the recipient of most of the Monday morning ribbing when the Redskins lose which has been most of the time the last few years.

I arrive at work with any new purchased toys ( it gives me time to work out how i'm gonna get them into the house without the other half knowing), and spend many fine minutes admiring/playing reguardless who's watching. In fact I remember the day I bought my first fx master replica lightsaber (I too work on the underground) and a passenger I knew came to buy a ticket...I turned all the ligths off in the booking office (there was aqueue of people waiting) just to show him how cool it was lit up.
I've been open about it the past couple of jobs, and have been bringing a few in for display on top of a cabinet in my office. Not to mention the Spidey hanging on the wall and the Hulk hanging on the monitor. It usually sparks conversation about what toys people had as a kid and what they buy their kids. The response is almost always positive, and as long as you don't act ashamed, people tend to respect your hobbies.

Everyone knows I've collected toys for a long time in most places I've worked. Being in retail management I have moved about once a year for the past 10 years , so much of my items are in storage. But it has helped me see all over the country and find some great items over the years.
I like to teach a class on how to list and the loopholes for EBAY and many of my props for that is toy related. You would surprised at how many people have no idea about EBAY and all the great tax free money out there. When I worked for ToysRus for 6 years everyone knew I collected toys because I would get all the displays and had great contacts with the vendors for SW items. That's way I think I hate all these modern toys.

Everyone at the job I just left knows about my comic book/Star Wars/toy obsession. I've never had a job with a desk or an office, so I've never had anywhere to display toys. Maybe someday...But for now I'll have to settle with wearing the badges I got from the DC booth at comicons on my jacket, purse, etc.

Around here in the capital city of WV I'm considered a freak of nature for collecting toys and comics, you see, if you aren't involved in the "3 D's" (Drugs, Drama, and Dumba**ses) you aren't cool. Being a singer in a rock band is even worse. *sighs* I really don't have many people to talk to about my collections that would truly appreciate it. I have a few close friends who understand but most don't so when I do shows I usually watch people get drunk, make total morons out of themselves while I stay mute.
My bandmates know and understand my love and collect toys themselves. Eric my drummer has a great collection of Simpsons figures, Dave my guitarist is a HUGE Spiderman and Iron Man fan as well as being a Transformers head like me and Roadblock well, that's who I'm giving the Mr. Monster to for Christmas!
Then there's Trappy, he's as ate up with Megos as I am!
Then after that there's just a small few. I feel so alone here! :ugh_y:
See why I bother all of you?
Yes, it doesn't matter one bit. If your cool your cool and if your a geek your a geek, what your hobbies are will not change that.

Heh, yeah but it totally describes all of the so-called "Charleston Music Scene"! So being here at home, taking care of my Mother and bringing home the bread is better than being around a buncha buttheads anyday!

for years I hid toy collecting like a drunk hides booze but in my mid 20's I started to bring joes to work and keep superpowers on my desk. I had decided to embrace my hermit lifestyle. Oddly enough my Wife started dating me even knowing about the toys. of course now she has to share our bedroom with megos, transformers and joes

I'm right there with you. My wife collected CareBears and Strawberry Shortcake..so now We COLLECT them.
But I loved giving tours ot my dates and ending up in the bedroom with shelves of toys in college .

People know but it generally doesn't come up. People know that I'm a "big kid" so it's not really a shock. One kick I get out of showing people my collection(s) is that to them, it seems like I have the world as far as the size of my collections. I then get to tell them that my collection is somewhat small compared to the big collectors out there and that people have entire rooms to devoted to toys, Mego & otherwise. Try telling the carded Iron Man story to non-collector and watch the reactions!

For the longest time, my friends all knew I collected dolls and action figures, but I never made an issue of it. To each their own and all that. But at my last job, when I was very heavily into eBay, I kept having things shipped to the office because I too lived in an apartment where packages were delivered to the rental office which I could never reach during hours.
Being a kid at heart, I'd take a break and quickly scan each arrival, and then close them up and hide them under the desk at my work counter. Well, after the first few packages arrived, my coworkers began asking me the 5 Ws and little by little, it became a routine to open every thing in front of everybody and pass the items around. In no time it became a mini show & tell routine. I was amazed at how everybody had gotten into it! It really made for a nice break, and would sort of reinvigorate everybody as we returned our focus to our jobs, laughing and chuckling comments among ourselves. Unfortunately, the management regime changed, and after noting how much of the office packages were directed my way, they "asked" me to stop having things delivered. Morale dropped, end of story.
However, seeing how just the act of sharing something that personal warmed up the whole group, I decided there was no reason to be secretive anymore. Now it comes up in conversation pretty early at work or new with new acquaintances. The only bad response I ever had was one coworker complained about a Uhura giving the office a crotch-shot, being pantiless on top of my monitor. That was hilarious!

In work at the moment, thinking a Mego Spidey suspended from the celing would look great.

My work centers soley on the "manly" world of pipelines and refineries. Hard hats, steel toe boots. A bachelors in beer drinking and a minor in recreational drug use aren't required, but they are a plus. We test pipe and structural welds using radiographic testing (using a gamma, iridium 192 or cobalt 60 source), ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle testing, and every type of nde (non-destructive testing) there is.
I am head of radiation safety for my company. I make sure these guys are working safely and in accordance with NRC and state regulations when dealing with our radioactive materials.
As you can imagine, this "manly" profession doesn't tolerate no "panty waist, toy collectin' nerds".
Except me. They know all about my Hulk obsession. And, yeah, they joke with me about it. But, they tread lightly. One, I'm their boss. Two, this "panty waist, toy collectin' nerd" has arms bigger than most of their legs.

I'm at work at the moment at a station I don't cover very often...which is a blessing as there is quite a decent toyshop up the road. Whenever i'm working there my staff know when I go to dinner i'm gonna be coming back with a big bag of plasticky toy goodness. They laugh and usually say if they are for my kids but once I open up my goodies all work stops to see what i've bought.
Hmmm it's almost time for a dinner break now....where's my wallet?

I started training classes for a new job this week, working in behavioral health. For one of our introductory exercises, we had to tell a partner about something we're passionate about. I ended up across from the instructor and without a moment's hesitation I told him about customizing action figures. He had never heard of such a thing and asked a lot of questions about it. Before long, we were chatting about toys we had as kids and then realized that everyone else had finished the exercise and was waiting for us to stop talking! He said, "That's really cool. Your whole face lit up when you started talking about that..."

Y'know, it's threads like this that keep me comin' back to you all.
Personal, and awash with anecdotes of our favorite hobby.
We recently had a horrible death in the family and I have been really out of it for a few weeks (which explains my lack of posting). I started reading this thread weeks ago but never finished (I was at work at the time). Tonight I got 'em all in one sitting and I must say my spirits are lifted tremendously.
I am thinking about what accessories I need again.
Thank you all very much.
