I know that Black Vulcan was a stand-in for Black Lightning in the Superfriends.
It just occured to me that Samurai has very similar powers as Red Tornado. I wonder if there was any thoughts of including Reddy at any point in the development of the Superfriends as well and they did a similar switcharoo when coming up with the Hanna Barbera created ethnic Superfriends.

They were probably going for the ethnic thing, especially since Apache Chief doesn't seem to have a counterpart in the Silver Age JLA...plus Reddy didn't have much of a personality back then. He's come into his own over the years since....

If they were trying to graft brand new ethnic characters onto classic JLA members, I can sort of see their thinking when it came to Apache Chief.
"The Atom? What's his powers? Shrinking? What good is that? How about growing instead?"

The Atom was one of the early season guest-stars on Super Friends though wasn't he? Along with Green Arrow and The Flash...

Atom was first on the SF in the 1977 season (the first one with the Wonder Twins). Why he got left out of the Challenge season, I'll never know. Hawkgirl I can understand, since they already had Katar. Rima, who needed her? How'd she rate? She had a DC book for two seconds, and got onto the Super Friends. She doesn't even rate a Who's Who entry.
I thought it was weird how Samurai got such a push in the last years of Super Friends/Super Powers shows. I guess they knew he was getting an action figure (although Black Vulcan and Samurai were slated for them too).

Which is exactly what the latest incarnation (and freshly cancelled) of Ant-Man excels at. They don't bill him as Irredeemable for nothin'!
