...and Doc Ock was the villain. I thought he was a Spidey villain. I know that DC has the Justice League and Marvel has the Avengers, so I know groups of heroes will fight each other's foes in that way. But is crossover to a single hero common or was it a rare thing?

Dr. Doom started out as a Fantastic Four foe but has pretty much fought all of the big guns of the Marvel U at one time or another....it's commonplace today....

It was a bit less common back then but it happened.

They used to mix match villians (still do). Spidey has a lot of villians that have turned up in other books. Marvel and DC do that all the time. The heroes don't get jealous

My favorite is when the Riddler showed up in Green Arrow or Solomon Grundy...

Of course one of the biggest "borrows" was when Frank Miller made The Kingpin (pretty much a Spidey villain) into a major Daredevil villain. Now, of course, he's one of DD's biggest rogues.

Although Punisher's also been a good Kingpin foil as well.

I know they have revisited Kingpin's origins a bit too much lately with huge confusion, but I'm very intrigued by what I've seen in the first issue of PunisherMax.

Basically they are creating an interesting premise that the Kingpin was just an urban legend that the organized crime families created until Wilson Fisk decided to take on the mantle.

I think it increased to fever pitch with the crossover nuttiness of the nineties.

You even had situations where Doc Ock would beat up Hulk in the pages of Spiderman by Eric Larson...

Which Hulk writer Peter David took offense to, so a few months later, Hulk would take Doc Ock out with one finger...
