View Full Version : Z-Body Production Sample
The production samples finally arrived today and I wanted to share some pics. Here are some comparison shots of the Z-Body and an original MEGO body. Unfortunately there are some issues that still need to be addressed which means it will not be available before the end of the year.

What issues are you talking about?
The body looks just fine to me!
Really makes that Klingon look dangerous in that red suit!

Other than a few minor cosmetic problems the two biggest issues are with the grip style hands and the feet. The grip style hands are made of hard plastic instead of a flexible material, and the feet should be removable but they're not.

Looking good otherwise!
Is that bodysuit something your planning on selling too....or going to be using for one of your figures ?

I actually bought the bodysuit about five years ago but I can't remember where from. It's not one I was planning to use for any of my figures but I do like the design so I might consider having it reproduced.

Actually I think you're right because I know it didn't come from Dr. Mego.

There's no built in "bulge", it's just how the suit fits.

I doubt it. The Chinese factories are already swamped with work that needs to be done before Christmas so odds are they'll take care of the larger jobs first.

I was wondering: what are the chances of getting "generic head sculpts"?
Like a very "standard" looking face (could actually be a bald head), on to which a customizer can sculpt his specific details (like hair, a helmet,...)
Would save us the effort of having to remove stuff that is not right for the figure we're aiming for.
I know, it's asking a lot, but a "blank canvas" figure is what we're looking for.

Generic heads will be available but they'll be factory produced and made of vinyl just like original MEGO heads. I'm not familiar with all of the customizing techniques but I'm guessing a resin head would be better suited for what you're wanting to do.

Resin would be better, but vinyl is fine, really.
As long as the face is not too distinctive (like, "hey, that's Wolverine!"), it's all good. You can just as well work your magic on vinyl. I've sculpted features on top of old Mego heads.

Unfortunately they're not ready yet but for good reason. After putting the last production sample under extreme scrutiny I found two areas that I thought still needed work. One was a minor modification to the upper body, and the other was a complete overhaul of the legs. The factory is working on the changes now and the bodies will be shipping at the same time as the Buck Rogers figures which should be around April.

I have to admit I was really not interested in seeing yet another body made given all we have to choose from.
With that said - i'm impressed. As was mentioned before, I would love to see the Mego style waist joint for some articulation there, but I'm pretty impressed overall. Strong, but not too buff. Will make for some good superheroes.
I do worry how the suits you're making will fit on the vintage stuff given the body is slightly larger...
Can't wait to see the final product!

Had I gone with a MEGO style waist joint the body would have needed some type of elastic band to hold it together and I wanted to avoid that. The Z-body is slightly larger than an original MEGO body but not by that much. I can't say for sure but I feel like any clothing I have made will fit the vintage bodies just fine.

When when when?
When when when?
The Z-Bodies will be landing the same time as the Buck Rogers figures which should be between April and May. As soon as I have a new production sample with the revised legs I'll be sure to post some pics.
I received the revised Z-Body production sample and wanted to share some pics. The revised body is on the left in each picture and as you can see the legs have been completely changed. Their proportions match the upper body much better than the skinnier legs on the old version. There's still one more tweak that needs to be made but it's nothing major and everything is still on schedule. I'll start taking a pre-orders once I know the first run has been shipped from the factory.

Never would have thought to ask this before the debate over the Mattel body, but... what is the poseability like? Can he sit? kneel? bend at the waist?
Also, do you plan to offer the body in other colors and skin tones?

I plan on putting my Green Arrow head on one, and maybe a couple of Ivanhoe or a Klingon head that I have in my spare parts bin.
These are gonna be SWEET to have!
Has anyone noticed that they are a smidge taller looking than vintage or repro Megos?
Stand the two side by side, and the ZICA does look to be a bit taller, but it may be a trick of the light, or the way that it's made.
Still, I'm gonna get a few!
Thanks for the compliments everybody and I'm thrilled you're happy with the revisions. Even though the body is more muscular than a MEGO style body it doesn't come off looking like a steroid induced monstrosity, especially when clothed.

I always try to post updates when I can, especially since I know how much it sucks to be kept in the dark on stuff.
The body has a good range of poseability thanks to the added articulation and holds any pose you place it in very well. The waist swivels but doesn't bend.

Yes, the body is slightly taller than vintage or repro MEGO bodies. The plan was to make them the same size but the factory miscalculated a little on the rate of shrinkage in the plastic.

Congratulations again. Everything I see and read from your line is fantastic. And I´m pretty sure it will be the best among all the new Mego-like series.
I specially like that you change the knee articulation. That kind of hidden articulation -as Hasbro 3 3/4" figures have- is more expensive to do? Are you going to use it in the elbows also, maybe in the future, or for the women body?

The female body design still hasn't been finalized yet so I'm not sure what type of articulation the elbow and knee joints will have. I've found that it can be a little difficult trying to get the right balance between articulation and appearance when designing the bodies. Seems as though there's no specific design that works best for both and there's always a compromise that that has to be made.

I never got into the Mego Buck Rogers line as a kid; the 3 3/4" figures were inferior to Micronauts and I never knew about the 12" line, and doubt I would've bought them if I had. But I am super psyched for these.

Beautiful work! Well-proportioned, not goofy, not over-muscled, perfect! These will make great superhero bodies for retro-Mattels. (It's amazing to me how big companies can get it wrong, and small companies can get it right. It's like the big ones go for the common denominator but end up miscalculating even that.)
Buck Rogers will probably be one of those rare "exception" lines for me, i.e. sometimes you're only a casual fan of the license but you get them anyway because the figures look amazing. (Excellence has a way of tipping the scales.) Here's hoping your stable of licensed figures expands to include... everything. (Maybe you could do what Sideshow did for 12-inch, and sub-license Star Wars for an 8-inch format!)
Quick question. The old body was slightly taller than Megos, and the updated body looks slightly taller than the old. Is he growing, or is it just the way the feet or legs might be arranged?

At some point down the road that type of revision could be made to the body. It really all depends on how many complaints I get from the body not having that particular type of articulation.

Don't know if this has been asked, and sorry for being such a pain, but, any chance of making different size bodies in the future? Larger frame bodies for Thor, type figures and Smaller frame bodies for Teen Titan type figures? Once again, I apologize for all the questions, but, I see endless possibilities in the 8"inch world of customizing once your Z-bodies are released! and if you should decide to add the extra articulation to the mid-section, It would be very much appreciated!!

Depending on the project there's always the chance a new body design could get made. For example, I need a female body for the next Buck Rogers series because it includes two female characters. Same goes for revisions. If I see a need for it I'll try my best to make it happen.
There's a lot of ideas being tossed around behind the scenes with two other companies I'm working with and the 8" action figure market is definitely getting some attention in those conversations.

Very Nice!! Look forward to buying some bodies! Any chance of adding a joint to the mid section, ala the DCUC figures, so the figure has better range of motion?
That's the one glaring problem with these bodies, and I really don't get why a simple ball type waist douldn't be done. Is there a waist rotation at least or is the torso all one piece?

Yes, there's rotation at the waist.
For years I've had a George Reeves Superman head that is just a little oversized. I think this head is going to be perfect for your slightly larger Mego-esque body.

Curious, do the arms have a bicep swivel? I can't really tell. The bicep or upper arm swivel is one of the key parts of the Cast-a-way body that I love. That was one of my biggest disappointments with the Mattel body. Seems like that's a natural point of articulation to add to these figures.

Hi Zica,
I can't wait for your new bodies to become available. Are the hands interchangeable with Emcee, CasteAway figures?

No, they're not interchangeable. I tested them on an original MEGO body and found that the wrist posts are too narrow to fit securely in the arm hole.

They're not here yet but they will definitely be arriving this month. The first order is relatively small and I'm having them shipped in via airmail instead of surface so they should arrive fairly quick.

U folks r gonna have a lot of angry wanna be customers then. :yuk: I hope to be able to get at least one body before they sell out. Are the suits and accessories going to be available too?
Thank you Zica again for your replies and updates on this board.

The first shipment should be large enough to cover most or all initial orders so don't start gathering the pitchforks and torches just yet. Suits and accessories won't be available when the bodies launch. I've got my hands full with the Buck Rogers project and I want to have it finished before I start sending more stuff to the factory.

A MAJOR :clap: for the bodies. I hope the joints will be nice and tight. I will need at least five of 'em. A real major  for the suits and accessories.
As always, I appreciate ZICA for your responses and updates.

The suits and accessories can wait, as far as I'm concerned. I just want three bodies.
