This 1976 Toy Trade ad for Remco's McDonaldland characters seems a little odd to me. While I was fond of the McDonald's commercials and had many birthdays at my local franchise, I clearly remember not understanding why they were action figures. Well made action figures at that.

However, some folks on the forums have told me these figures are very happy memories of these and honestly, that play set is pretty funky cool.

I'm with you in not understanding why these were made. But what do I know? I use to have a McDonald's blanket when I was a kid.

what's even creepier is how they look without any clothes. I see a lot in lots on ebay missing their outfits.
My sister had Grimace ( basically a hairy beanbag with feet, LOL) and I do recall seeing thesee new in stores and really was impressed with that playset. Never had any of the others or the set, though. I wouldn't mind the Hamburger headed ones and maybe a nice Ronald and Hamburgler but the others are kinda MEH.

Geez! Somebody buy that kid a bigger bed!! No wonder he dreams about McDonalds Toys all scrunched up like that. Its...it's...INHUMAN!

On another note, I always wanted the McDonalds figures as a kid. I think mainly because they were Mego scale...or maybe because I always wanted to run Grimace over with a train?

love 'em

The train set with the stilts and the apple tree is just plain crazy cool. Plus the rotate the head with the thumb button action is fun as all get out, and a little creepy at the same time. When my daughter was 4, I had a set of these come in the mail and she was really into them. She was holding Ronnie, wiggling his head, and saying ' I need a hammmmburger' in a really spooky scratchy high pitched voice. Good times.

Well, they just upgraded his bed from a dresser drawer...

These are cool figures, and very 70s. I had a plush Ronald McDonald as a kid, but I don't recall seeing these then. I don't think I ever ate at a McD's until the early 80s anyway.

Part of McDonald's early attempts to brand these characters....until the lawsuits began. I don't recall these at the store level back in the day....but I do remember seeing the Fisher-Price McDonald's (in fact my cousins had it in their basement of toys) and I had the plush Ronnie Mac also.

Holy hannah, where did you grow up? Or maybe your parents had the sense my mother did not and kept you away from the red and yellow habit that formed in most of us by the age of 5.

Never had much interest in these as a kid, but I have to admit I'm very interested in them now. They represent not just the toys of that time, but also the marketing of that time. I do have the McDonald's glasses that came out in the mid-70's. Where are Mayor McCheese and Big Mag these days, Florida?

Someday I may try and get these and the train set.

I never knew about these figures until I joined this forum. I knew about the stuffed Ronald and Hamburglar dolls (I have those). And my cousin had the litlte restaurant playset w/ the block head people. I don't know if I would have wanted these or not, but I think they're interesting.

I probably would have rather had Krofft dolls. :yeah:

I am chasing these down as well. I don't know why but I love these. Like said these bring fond memories. I even bought the huckleberry toys versions for nostalgic reasons.

I didn't even realize these weren't Mego until I joined this forum. I always thought they were Mego since they were the same scale and from the same time period.
have to admit I was a little disappointed in the figures when I finally ended up with one. I got a naked Ronald in a lot and although he would be cool to have on display (with clothes!), I was shocked at the lack of detail and articulation in the bodies. Looked like they put all their money into that gimmicky head-wobble knob feature.

I have the entire Remco set mint on card and a complete loose set as well. I also have the trainset complete in the box. Fun figures but ones I didn't get until the 90's. Sears use to advertise them in their Christmas catelog back in '75 or '76. They were also carried at a local department store in Louisville called Roses.

I miss the characters, i think they should run them again as retro characters in the commercials

I really miss Ronald and all the gang. Now, McDonalds has the Im Lovin It Hip Hop thing going on, which I despize, but hey, its not the 70's or 80's anymore, so..But I still hate it.

I'm in the same boat.
Never ate at McDonnalds until sometime in the early 80's.
That is when they finally built one in my town.
I was in high school by then.

I grew up on Dairy Queen. Which I still love to this day.
And before they closed we also had a Red Barn.

Slowly picking these up here and there.

Same here. I've wanted these since I was a kid, and I have a couple of 'em MOC now. I did get to play with them when I was young because my best friend and his older brother had the whole set. I loved the characters. Somehow instead I got a giant stuffed Burger King doll, don't even remember how and when I got that.

The first time I found out about these figures ever existing is when I started collecting back in the 80's ...

I guess they weren't distribituted well in my area.

its not the 70's or 80's anymore, so...

Actually, it's not even the 90s anymore...and pretty soon, it won't even be the 2000s anymore. :googly: I have to keep reminding myself of that. Pretty soon, there's going to be a Plaid Stallions type of site for the stuff we were wearing in the 90s. How's THAT for a wake up call! :terror:

Ah jeez...Didn't the 90's just happen last year? You are SO RIGHT. Time is just flying by. I mean, kids that were born when I graduated highschool are 27 years old now. How's that for a mind bender?:muh:

Does anybody have any info on variations of the Remco McDonaldland characters?

I have a few different types. There is a softer head version that has a flesh colored action lever thingy, and a version with a much harder and smaller head that uses a white controller to move the head around.

These variations are on more than one character, so I would assume there was a production change along the line. I am thinking the softer heads were first. The knob tends to be more difficult to work. The white knob/harder head versions are a lot smoother with the head nodding action.

Just wondering if anyone paid attention to differences in this line.

thanks

As a Vintage Toy Dealer I have had all these pieces at one time or another, just never at the same time. They're getting a lot harder to find complete. I think I have a Hamburgler figure, missing his hat. They are GREAT!

Does anybody remember all the McDonalds Glasses with these characters that they gave away in the 70's? I love those & drink out of them now.

These are classics. I just picked up the first wave of Huckleberry's new figures, minus Grimace. who I still had from my childhood.

I love these figures and have them all except for the Pirate. The playset is one of the best put out in the 70s.
