Are there any good casting/mold making videos?

    Hi,

I thought there used to be some good tutorials about casting and moldmaking but I can seem to find them. Does anyone know of any?

      Hmmmm....

What're you having a problem with? It might be easier to get some suggestions from around here.

Ok, well I was just wondering what people here consider the better mold making material as well as casting material. I hear that smoothon or allumite(?) are the popular ones.

I know there are a few different ones people like. The Smooth-On stuff is pretty popular. I use GI 1000 silicone for my molds, and EasyFlo 60 for the parts. The EasyFlo is very slightly coarse and porous, so it takes paint pretty well. I find paint to be fragile on the Smooth-On stuff.

I have used Smooth-On before for commercial jobs... their 10:1 mix is no more or less finicky than any other 10:1 ratio mix in my experience, and the product had a good skin, but because of the nature of the beast I eventually favored a 1:1 mix for my own projects (and subsequent commercial jobs). 10:1 means of course that you mix ten of one part to one of another... if you don't hit it exactly right the material can either foam up or stay liquid forever, leaving a mess and destroying a mold. It requires a (preferably electronic) gram scale or an old school triple beam scale to measure.

1:1 requires a decent eyeball and two plastic bathroom disposable rinse cups filled more or less equally then mixed together - a lot more forgiving. There are a variety of popular options there... Personally I like Micromark stuff...

I use their transparent amber formula which allows casting in colored resin:

They also have a decent one to one room temperature vulcanizing (meaning no heating or post curing treatment required) silicone, and silicone is the only way to go for molds.

This is the color cast stuff:

That's some nice work. I'll probably get some samples from both micromark and smoothon and compare.

Thanks so much for the help

                      Here's a good link:

How To Mold Rubber Cast Resin

I rarely use alumilite resin. I mostly use smooth-on 326 and tint it to the color that I need.

The only thing missing in these links are the fact that you need to wear rubber gloves and safety glasses when useing these products. You don't want liquid resin on your skin or in your eyes.

Has anyone ever used this kit? Is it good for making Mego Head Molds? Thanks
