Marx is the rolls royce of playsets, having gone from their hey day in the 1950s and 1960s, they still had a little fight left in them by the mid seventies. While miles away from their former glory, they were cranking out a toy that delivered hours of play in a little box.

I had the Battle Ground set. Had no idea when I had it that it was the entire set. I always thought there was some stuff missing.

Ahh, the late great Marx toys. truly they were the best at what they did, and I still miss them today!

A bit off topic, but can someone answer a possible related Marx question for me ?

I had a playset that looked very similar to the Fort Apache playset, but all of the walls and buildings were litho'ed tin.

I'm not sure if the above Marx Fort Apache case set is litho'ed tin, but it was not what I had.

Mine looked more like the regular Fort Apache set.

It came in a huge white box about (just guessing) 3' x 3' x 5"

Was what I had made by Marx ? ... or was it a knockoff ?

The year I got it was around 1973/74-ish

Yep, Marx made them in tin too, but I think (but not 100% sure) they stopped around 67-68. I'll find out for sure though. Marx was a very retailer friendly toymaker...if somebody said we want the tin set back, Marx would have done so.

The '67-'68 dates sound about right.

Let me splain,
I got my playset around '73, but it was bought for me by my older brother -- who won it at a local auction.
The auction house (at that time) used to sell unused but slightly out of date things.
That's the same place he got me a MIB Remco LIS robot in '73-ish for around $3.00

.......And heres a pic of the earlier set. It didnt fold up in a case, but it did at various times come with tin (versus plastic) versions of the fort.

I kind of like the Ideal set.

Having the fort and Indian camp in one set is really neat.

I love Marx playsets. It used to have a bunch of stuff back in the 90s. It used to be you couldn't go to some estate auction without a Marx playset showing up. I got rid of my collection in '99. The best one I had was the Rex Mars set in the box it was beautiful 50's sci fi goodness.

The two sets I am most nostalgic about are The Blue and Gray set and Battleground. I played with those to death as a kid.

It's funny, I've been itching to pick up a decent Battleground on ebay. Coolest set ever!

I had the Navorrone set, and the Fort Apache, but mine had a playmat that isnt shown in that pic.
I also had a Dino set from this era, and a I think it was Iwo Jima set.
I had another boxed set, the kind with the cardboard box with the plastic lid for storage, germans and americans, dont know the name tho.
