View Full Version : Is Wolverine good?

It was brought up on another site that Wolverine might not pass as a hero.... and this got me thinking. Mainstream comics have always been wishy-washy on controversial topics; and I think Wolverine falls into this trap. Sure; we're constantly TOLD how bad and vicious he is, but is he? He claws a lot of folks, but does he actually kill any? In one of his first appearances he even corrects Storm when she derides him for hunting by pointing out that he doesn't actually KILL anything... he just likes to see how close he can get.

So the question is; is it a disservice to the reader to do this sort of thing? If you're GONNA have fights and such, should there be actual consequences like death, injuries and blood; or should you crib it like superheroes usually do. Sure, Superman rescues that kid from the collapsing building... but what about everyone ELSE that was in it? (Although it's usually implied that everyone else got out. Forgetting the kid apparently.)

Interesting question ... in the comics world it seems we need to suspend belif quite a bit. I do like how in the last 20 years or so, the mention that Batman has gotten many broken bones and is scarred on his body, but i don't think that we need to have 1,000s of civilian deaths as a consequence of a superhero battle ... it's TOO real!!! I like the escapist aspect of comics, reality is tough enough!!!

Interesting factoid that touches upon what you guys are discussing...

I believe I read once in BATMAN 1970s TPB collection that the reason that
the big bad guys in BATMAN comics never killed anyone (at least during
that era) is so that they didn't appear to be these dangerous murderers
who are out on the street for what seems like eternity with BATMAN
(the "big hero") being unable to anything about 'em :)

But how realistic is that?

Didn't Batman used to carry a gun shoot guys in his earliest appearances in Detective?
