With the J.J. Abram's helmed film poised to be a block buster, I thought it only fitting to do a top ten list of some of the better 23rd century items we got in the 1970s. Many might seem crude by todays standards but most have never been topped in the fun department.
The 1970s were truly the golden age of Star Trek merchandise, prior to that companies just lazily put the words "Star Trek" on recycled space guns and "Astro trains"(?) but the 1970s saw the biggest merchandising spree this side of Planet of the Apes.

Great list Brian! I have a 90s reissue of the AMT bridge model, and it shows Sulu as the third guy on the box, but maybe it's open for interpretation.

No love for the Mego Phaser 2 game (the big honkin' console one)? A friend of my dad's found it in a dumpster and gave it to us. Dad cleaned it up, and we were shooting Klingons before I even knew what Star Trek was!!!

I had never seen that Star Trek Big Wheel before. Holy poop I would loooooooooved to have that when I was a kid. And I was only a mild ST fan in the 70's. It would have cured my insane jealousy of Richie San Fillipo's green machine in ward speed!

I found the Big Wheel in a toy trade magazine but I swear I also found it in a Sears Catalog, I'd better back that up.

Yeah, that Big Wheel is AWESOME. I don't recall ever seeing it before either. Nowadays they'd slap some stickers on the existing Big Wheel mold.

If I could make 1 change, I would swap out the Phaser-2 target game for the regular Remco electronic phaser.

I NEVER saw this before.. Jeez, I would've been sitting in one of these, despite the fact I would have been in my late teens already.

Hey, I would have like it..

I would have loved to have the big wheel. I think I had everything else on the list except the model. I was never mutch into models, except maybe mode boats we used to pour gasoline on and send off to sea for a firery sinking. yeah we were pyros.

Where I grew up in the country, we didn't have have a paved driveway or sidewalks, so a Big Wheel wouldn't have done me much good.

They're probably horrible in the grass or on a dirt road :smiley1:
