I've been looking for a nice, unslabbed, ungraded Amazing Spiderman #129 for quite a while.
I finally decided to bid on one, and another guy decides he wants it too. So he starts bidding against me.
I won't post the link...I'll just post the bidding on the book so far:

Please tell me your top bid wasn't $175.00. If it was I would look into any bid retractions. For someone who was willing to go that high on a piece he went at very small increments, kinda like he was looking for your max bid amount.
Well he has bid on 6 #129's in the last ten days. Lost them all. THe only things he has bid on are Punisher stuff. At least it doesn't appear to be shilling. Like you said, I think he was feeling you out for your max.

that sucks man, looks like he really got you there,so did you win or is it still on auction? cause he'll probably mess with you in the last minute

Okay, I won't tell you my top bid was $175 (so far). You're right, he was looking for my max amount - but he didn't do anything wrong. I just hate that he drove the price up...but that's part of eBay bidding.

No, it's still got 5 days left I think.

Bidders like that are the main reason why I snipe whenever possible.

Retract your bid if you want to. That is alittle crappy what he did.
It makes me wonder if he had some wierd sort of bidding program to push up the bid incrementally to a certain amount. The seller placed all of those bids in under 8 minutes, usually taking only 10 - 15 seconds between bids, using mostly regular incremental amounts. The bidder might not bother you anymore though, since he just won another auction for the same comic since jacking your bid up. It would be interesting to see what happened if you retracted. The price would probably drop to $55, and he might end up with two.

Yeah I'm sure if you retract it he'll probably retract it as well and then you could get it cheap

This is exactly how I ended up paying $151 for my $65 General Ape. :please:
I got so tired of losing that when the bid was $70, I put in a big bid thinking "I'm getting this one if it kills me". I didn't expect another idiot like me thinking the same thing and bidding $150. Lesson learned. There is always another one somewhere around the corner.

Why is it crappy?
Unless he was a friend driving it up for his buddy, then yes it was crappy, if he wanted it, then.... All is fair in love and eBay. Who has the deepest pocket and wants it the most wins.
Nothing crappy going on...
I was bidding on a auction a few months ago that was around $20 until the last 10 minutes with only a couple bids on it, my high bid was $100.50. I walked away for the last $10 minutes of the auction thinking I may have gotten a deal, only to come back to find out I won it at $100, some guy out of the blue swooped in and felt my high bid out with around 8 bids. Was I dissapointed? yes, was I mad? Not realy, but it was bitter sweet, but I still got it.

Sniping isn't worth a damn unless you go high enough.
I've been on eBay for a long time, I rarley ever snipe. I just put my high bid and let her go. Sure, I lost a few to snipers, but I have also still beat out quite a few too because they never went high enough in the last few seconds.
I only snip if the price is really low in the last few minutes and I can actually watch the auction. Won a few, lost a few.

Sorry, I have to disagree. Of course it depends on the situation, but sniping could very well have helped in this auction. It's better not to bid early because of bidders exactly like this one, that keep chipping away with small bids, trying to find your max (it also helps against shill bidding). It would be better to do a low bid first, let that guy keep bumping until he finds your low max, and you know that this kind of bidder is only going to go slightly above that max. Then you can do a real bid right at the end, and he wouldn't know what hit him. :smiley1: Of course, someone else could come out of the blue and still bid higher. There are several situations where a well placed snipe is the best move (but yes, you should try to make sure it's a decently high bid). I've personally won much more auctions by sniping compared to placing my max bid early.

I placed my max bid like I did because I'm not going to be around when the auction ends.
I don't usually do that - I watch and snipe like most at the last second.

Yeah, sometimes I've had to do that as well. But I've found my success rate is MUCH lower when I have to do that. Too bad, I've lost some good stuff that I think I would have won if I sniped, based on the bidding history and the bidders' method of bidding (may be time to look into a sniping service?)

Very true. I usually snipe as well and my success rate is much higher than when I place my max bid early because I can't be there at the end
