Polaris Con Review : State of Trek Fandom

Went to Polaris (formerly known as Toronto Trek) this weekend. They have a $10 pass to the dealer's room and I was feeling geeky.

I haven't been to a trek convention in years and Polaris, is no longer a Star Trek convention, it's more of a SF TV Con now.

Attendance seemed down, when I worked these things in the early ninties, you could barely breath, this Saturday I found wide aisles, it was still well attended.

I noticed right away, nobody seemed to be wearing a ST:TNG costume, not one picard, hell not even one spock. I did see a Doctor and Rose, Storm Troopers, Santa Claus, Spartans from 300, some klingons and about 50 Stargate people. Things are really getting diverse.

The dealers room was ok, I only went there to buy stuff from pixelbarrel (Doctor Who Importers) I noticed several card dealers.

Downer: I put about 50-75 Museum cards on the "tucked in the corner" flier table. When I returned a half hour later, they were all gone. Somebody took the whole stack, I felt like going up to the card dealers and confronting them. Totally frustrating when a jerk takes the whole lot like that.

Plus Side: I got the coolest toy ever! Check the video
Demonstration of Tardis hub for your computer, neat toy.

Yeah, I wanted a hub really badly and this was singing to me. I can't resist pressing the "Vorp" button every so often.

Oh crap, that means eBay will soon be flooded with Trek cards

And if that wasn't bad enough your Tardis broke down as well apparentely. He still makes a lotta noise, but he didn't disappear...

Yeah, mostly Kirk and Spock mind you. I didn't bring a variety for fear of being hijacked. I can't believe somebody did that, I can understand taking a stack but they scooped everything, makes me punchy/kicky.

Be patient, my two year old returns on Tuesday.

That sucks that someone stole your cards. But what goes around, comes around. Somewhere, sometime, something will come up and bite him in the butt!

              Brian,

Maybe the best thing to do would have been to go from table to table and ask dealers if they could give a few out every so often with their sales.

              Or,

put out a few cards and come back every so often and put a few more out for consumption.

              Never underestimate a fan's greed!
