1yoda is selling a mego meet exclusive trading card of the astronaut on ebay. Whats the deal with that. I know most of the members here dont even have that card yet. Made the trek down to the mego meet and got the two exclusive cards free of charge but man just sickens me that its up to almost $13 for one card. How do you sell something that is given to you free and saids its not for resale right on the card.

I posted this in the scifi forum but I had a disheartening experience at a trek convention this weekend, somebody scoffed all the cards I put out in five minutes. It really bugged the living hell out of me.

I hate greedy jerks! I'm going to a Sci-Fi Con (Star Trek and more) in Sept. and I plan on putting them out a few at a time. Hopefully, that'll get them in more hands. Even if I stopped collecting Megos (not gonna happen), I would never sell my cards. Oh well...

sad to see this happen, after all the efforts put up by myself and other members to get these cards in the hands of fellow members.

He also sold the Spock/Kirk checklist for $32
I would say it would be better to have dealers at shows hand the cards out, but I suspect many of them would pocket them and have them up on eBay within 24 hours of going home.

When me and my Bro(Wannabemego) went to the Big Apple Comic Con I was going to put them out on the table as you walk in...but my bro thought to just handing them out to people as we walked through the show. He ended up handing them out to kids rather than adults. Great idea that he came up with. He must have handed out a couple of hundred cards, and in my opinion got them into the hands of the people that you want to get them into the hands of....Kids. Expand the Mego goodness to the next generation.

Definitely a good idea Berto. I like it. It probably wouldn't hurt to give one or two directly to dealers to pique thier interest (and knowledge) by coming to the museum. Maybe even coordinate with the show coordinators to put some in dealer packets. Worst case you are just limiting the number of cards any one seller can get at once.

The Pittsburgh con at the end of the month will see Museum cards added to the grab bags of the first 1000 attendees. I wish I could do more things like this.
That's great Brian. It should definitely help control the flow while still getting the message out to a wide spectrum of people. You'd have to hand them out to get that kind of distribution.

Hey...
I'm a bit late to the post, but I wanted to add a little...
The Big Apple Comic Con has turned into something other then a show for kids so if we had dropped the box of cards on the Table, I KNOW for a fact it would have been lifted by one person and up on eBay the next day.
My logic behind handing them to kids was twofold.
1. There really wasn't much there for kids at all. After taking my son to see Fantastic Four (which he loved) I thought he'd enjoy the Comic Con...he didn't. It ashame because he really likes to read Spiderman, Teen Titans, & Fantastic Four Books (the ones that are made for kids).
So, seeing all those kids with there Dads/Uncles/Older Brothers with nothing in there hands...I thought they need something too (and my son LOVES the Museum Cards!!!). Anyway, the kids loved them...there eyes instantly lit up (gave about 3-4 per child/kid...tried to randomize them). Some parents asked me what they were and why I was giving them out...once I told them, some just said, 'Thanx'...but others remembered having them as kids and some of those wanted to go to the site to see the other figures and cards.
2. Kind of explain that a little above...The Parents.
The ones that remembered having them as kids were intrigued and excited. Some comments I remembered were:
...They still make these?
...I didn't know the same company made both Marvel & DC characters?
...Does the site sell any?...I'd love to get my hands on a [fill-in the blank], I had that as a kid and used to play with it for hours.
So not only were the kids excited, but so were the parents.
The last thing I remember was a kid (about 14-16 yrs old) saying that he had all the ones I had and loves visiting the Museum. He thought the Cards were kewl and needed Spidey & Superman. I asked him if he's a memeber, and he said 'No, I don't know much about Mego's to join and don't feel like I can contribute much.' I quickly responded by saying, 'Hey, I don't even collect Megos, but there were plenty of places on the site for me to exchange my thoughts/opinions and everyone (mostly) is respectful of one another and pretty kewl.' He thought so as well and said he may join, so I hope he did.
Anyway...just wanted to add that...
I plan on doing the same thing the next time around as well.

....If someone pays $32 for a trading card without doing a rudimentary google search to find the Museum and see if they can be had for LESS (free)....I just don't know what to do for you.

I guess some people have more money than brains. Maybe the next cards that come out can go to just members first then we want have to ask and beg for ones we dont have. Then all the extras we can give out and get them out there.Just a thought. I thought the Star Trek was cool the way it was done .I got the full set right away then when I get doubles I give them out to those who need or want. Thanks guys & gals maybe we could do something about the selling of these cards.Do you think ebay would do something about it? I know they stop some sells of boot leg stuff maybe they could help here since it does say free. Jerry

I think the problem with trying to get eBay to do something about it is (and I mean no disrespect here) is that those who have made these cards don't actually own the rights or have liscensed the rights to the charactors depicted in the cards.
Usually when eBay stomps on boot leg stuff it's because they've got Fox, Warners, Paramount, etc. (in other words, those who own or have the liscense to these properties) breathing down their necks.
I think the concern is that if we pitch too much of a fit it may blow up in out faces. It might draw the attention of Fox, Warners, Paramount, etc. and we end up getting slapped with a Cease and Dessist order.
And that would be it, no more cards for anybody. I could be off base on these, but that's my impression of the situation. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.
I think we just have to find a way to deal with it on our own. I love the idea of randomly handing them out to individuals, particuarly kids, at conventions as opposed to just dropping them at a table where they can all be snagged.

Maybe i'm just naive to the ways of the world ...... But, I really don't understand how any company can put a cease and dessist on these.
In the same vein, am I not aloud to take a picture of anything I own and give this picture away to someone--- regardless of what they do with it--- which is on them ?
If I take a picture of my '93 GMC pickup and give this picture to someone....... and they turn around and sell the photo--- should GMC be able to come after me ?
That would make for a very legally chaotic society ....
Maybe the next cards that come out can go to just members first then we want have to ask and beg for ones we dont have. Then all the extras we can give out and get them out there.Just a thought.
And a very good thought indeed! It's easier to buy them than keep posting for some and hope sombody throws you crumb.

Although Scott hasn't licensed the characters, he can legally copyright the artwork. If sellers on eBay were copying his artwork onto T-shirts, for example, he could demand that they cease and desist. They aren't.
Selling promo cards isn't bootlegging, nor does it break any of eBay's rules. The cards were made to be given away, and they were. They were made to promote the Mego Museum, and they have. None of us here has a right to dictate what the recipients do with the cards after they receive them. We don't have to like it, but there's nothing illegal about what they're doing.
Handing the cards out individually to kids ensures that unscrupulous scalpers don't grab them all for themselves, but it also keeps them out of the hands of the people we're trying to attract; '70s kids who haven't yet rediscovered the forgotten Mego figures they used to play with. If their parents see the cards, great. If not, that card is wasted.

Well, after a while of this happening again & again, I thought I'd comment
This would be helped (it seems) simply if stacks weren't left behind at tables
at toy shows----seems like everytime there's a complaint about Ebay cards
there's a reference to "leaving a stack on table" in a post here
If this EBAY/CARD thing is bugging everyone so much, I'd suggest being a
little more selective on their distribution
You can get enough cards into newbies hands by choosing the RIGHT dealers
to stock with cards to hand 'em out to customers (our generation or
otherwise) at stores or at shows and, in addition, the huge demand for them
which is spurred if only by word of mouth will force those that really want
them---newbies or otherwise--- to seek 'em out from our friendly
"Museum associates" who happily oblige them all the time
I'm always plesantly surprised to see how many helpful card traders
and "givers" there are here at the Museum----great work--- by the way--
I have to say to those guys

I undersyand why you would be upset over seeing a free Mego card up for sale on Ebay....uh..no..no I can't. How many things are up for auction on Ebay everyday that cost the owner nothing? Its all about the demand. I would personally love to get all my mego cards for free, but that boat has sailed....If you want to complete your set chances are you are going to have to buy a card ot two.....
I received my first 9 cards for free but the trade bus dried up...I have zero access to cards in my area. If I don't have an extra card that someone is interested in, I have to bid on ebay.
Thats just the ugly truth...and where there is a demand..there are people willing to sell their cards. Welcome to America.

I have been giving out random starter packs to anyone who wants them, they're deliberately for trading and the packs themselves were made from my stash. Which includes every card from #1. There are no rarities that people have to buy.

If you don't have what people want you don't get what you want. Unless you attend toy shows in big cities you don't see these cards. I read about big stacks of cards left on tables and its unimagineable. If your a big shot on the board (and I mean some of the members who've been here a while) or was able to attend the awesome Mego meet, you will have difficulty finding the cards. Yes, some of you guys are very generous. And Yes Some of you mail cards when Megos are purchased, but that is not the norm. I really enjoy the cards and it was a great idea, its a shame that they are not more easily accessible.

In my world, you don't start a sentence like that if you're not going to pick a fight. Your frustration is ill placed as I've already qualified.

this came off more dickish than i wanted but the point remains, the purpose of these cards is to be traded through good will by it's members. Defending the purchase of these will be always be reciprocated with castigation by it's creators and sponsors.
This is probably even more bothersome considering the open offering of freebies in regular rotation on these very boards.

Curtis, my observation is that you are a little late to the game. The WGSH were out of print what, last year, right? You were absent here for awhile. Doesn't mean you can't put together a set, but it will take awhile and some patience. Isn't that part of the fun? They can still be had by posting your want list and seeking out trades.
PM me a list of the cards you still need, and I will see what I can do. For the love of God and your own body (name that reference), please don't resort to buying them. There's no need.

Dan you have also been very generous, especially to me. Most of my cards I presently have came from you. I have yet to pay for a card, but I am a long way from completing a set.
My original post was intended to express why people purchase these cards. Its easier to buy them than to beg, borrow and trade.
When I stated that I wish they were easier to come by, I mean I want to go to my 7-11 and buy a couple of packs.
When I said I want to live in Palitoys world I meant I want to live in Palitoys world...the Mego museum is the next best thing.
I gotta start saying what I mean.:wink_y:
Its true what Dan said, I became a member recently, but I was not aware there was a set, that has been out there for a while. I was under the impression that this has been a recent development (last year or so) I have no idea who makes the cards or how they are made, or evn how often they are made. I have visited the museum on and off for the last five years, but the cards were new and fun.
