http://megomuseum.com/mmgallery/files/2/4/5/7/DSCN0928.jpg This is my first attempt at doing a head sculpt here.He is still in a very rough stage.I'am trying to capture the likeness of a specific ape. What ape do you think he is or does he just look like another damn ape?

His nostrils suggest gorilla. Perhaps Julius? He looks wonderful!! I see possibilities!!! Adding hair is my favorite part!!

I hope you're making The Hunt Leader, and even if this ends up being Marcus, head of Security Police will you be casting him? I'm sure a lot of people would buy one...

Sorry but i'm trying to do Ursus.Made a little progress, but still have a ways to go.The Hunt leader or Marcus would be some cool ones to do,if Ursus turns out ok i may have try The Hunt leader.http://megomuseum.com/mmgallery/files/2/4/5/7/ursus2.jpg

What are you using to sculpt with, what medium? What tools are you using?

piecemaker
Feb 12, '09, 7:06 PM
http://megomuseum.com/mmgallery/files/2/4/5/7/tool.jpg Heres the tool i used, same one i used for Zauis gylphs. The medium is an oil based modeling clay that i had laying around. Its is a non hardening type clay.I should have waited til i got some super sculpty. I'm hoping i dont run into problems trying to make a mold of it.I'am getting some super sculpty tomorrow and i ordered the mold and resin kit today. If this first one dont turn out right at least i will have the right stuff and will do again.

http://megomuseum.com/mmgallery/files/2/4/5/7/ursus7.jpg Finally got this guy cast. This was the third sculpt i did of him, first one i used wrong clay and it was too big.Second one i used super sculpty, but it also came out a little too big.I had a heck of a time trying to get a decent pic. These were the best ones.Still have to do some sanding etc and then paint him.Should get some better pics when painted.

While i'm waiting for my paint supplies,i decided to turn the original Ursus sculpt into a generic soldier ape.Redid the nose, brows and roughed in some hair.Needs some work yet but i think he is looking alright so far.Looks like i'm going to be doing another Soldier Ape custom also.http://megomuseum.com/mmgallery/files/2/4/5/7/soldierape1.jpg

He looks great!! What medium is that?

piecemaker
Feb 22, '09, 11:52 PM
Thats super sculpty.(firm)

jessica
Feb 23, '09, 12:05 AM
I've got to try that. I think I'm using the pink stuff, Super Sculpey but it feels very soft. I was told you have more control with firm...Funny how your General Ursus was demoted to a gorilla soldier, while I promoted my gorilla soldier to be General Ursus...

piecemaker
Feb 23, '09, 12:33 AM
Yeah that is funny. This is the first super sculpty i have used but it says on the box "Firm texture is perfect for sculpting fine details" and this is a gray color which again the box says "makes clay easy to see and photograph".BTW you did a great job on Zira!

Looks great, but those eyes are mesmerizing

jessica
Mar 3, '09, 10:19 AM
Looks great painted, but are his eyes photoshopped?

piecemaker
Mar 3, '09, 4:03 PM
Yes i cleaned up his eyes with photoshop.I found out the eyes are not very easy to do,i got the right one but the left has been giving me problems.I tried to clean the left one up,then the right didn't look right,so i did it too.I know his eyes look weird in the pic,i'm going to try again tonight to get it right.I'm also trying to do the Ursus head, same problem those dang eyes.I will post the unphotoshopped pics when i get them done.
(That may take awhile) LOL

I tried painting the left eye again, still not happy with it but its looking better.Lost count how many times i have redone it.I see after taking the pic where i have to touch up.(Arrrgh, one slip and i get to redo again!)http://megomuseum.com/mmgallery/files/2/4/5/7/soldierape2.jpg

The eyes are the hardest, because they are so tiny. At least, that's how it is for me.

Meule
Mar 4, '09, 1:21 AM
I'm always having trouble with the eyes too, despite Dave's tutorial :wall:

jessica
Mar 4, '09, 1:30 AM
Sometimes it's just plain luck that I get the eyes to look in the same direction. Sometimes you can fool the eye into believing that the eyes of your figure are looking in the same direction by painting the doll dots. I know some people in the 1/6 world don't like doll dots, but I believe Megos are so tiny that you need the doll dots to breathe some life into your paint job. It's all just trickery.

piecemaker
Mar 4, '09, 5:29 AM
Yes the eyes are definately the toughest part. The tutorial is helpful but you still have to be very steady with the brush.I get them to the last dot then slip.I'm going to try trimming a brush, making the bristles shorter, maybe i will get more control that way.

You could probably get by just painting each eyeball as a black dot like MEGO did for the Soldier Ape... I repainted an AZRAK "chimp" into a gorilla and did his eyes that way too and they looked pretty good...

Mar 4, '09, 7:45 PM
I have a few of these heads cast,i'm going to try a couple different paint jobs on each one.Thats a good idea,i will definately be doing one like that.It will give each ape a slightly different look also.

Thanks Jessica. He just looks content with all those dirty humans running around, now the soldier ape looks mad as hell, like he's ready to crack some human heads.:enraged: :smiley1:
