Is Sawmill Gravy just a generic term for white sausage gravy?

I don't think I have ever heard of the term until I visited a Cracker Barrell restaurant.

On the other hand, one of my all time favorite breakfast meals was what we called Chipped Beef Gravy...I think I have seen it called Creamed Chipped Beef.

My mom made it from scratch along with homemade biscuits. I don't think you can buy anything that compares.

Gravy is good. And yes, I believe Sawmill gravy is just white gravy.

Of the fast food joints, I don't care much for McD's gravy and biscuits. Hardee's is good though.

Some of you guys may not even know that some McDonald's carry gravy and biscuits. When my wife and I were up in Michigan a few years back for the Motor City Con, she ordered biscuits and gravy at a local McDonald's. The guy behind the counter looked at her like she had lobsters coming out of her ears.

Yea, white gravy has a few different names like Sawmill, White or Sausage Gravy.

They're all basically the same with a few small differences

Best biscuits and gravy I ever had was in Deadwood SD

The gravy was so thick, it was like pudding

Ever heard of Red Eye Gravy? It's a very watered down gravy made from ham grease. Very salty! My grandfather loved it.

There was a restaurant in So. Cal called EJ's (I think) that made the BEST sausage gravy and biscuits! Man I miss that place.

When Cindy and I first started dating (back in high school) she came over for dinner at my house, and my mom had made white gravy and mashed potatoes. The potatoes came out pretty runny that night, and Cindy asked "Mrs. Franklin, what's this?" She thought it was gravy.

Years later, when we first got married, Cindy made gravy that was thick enough to almost be catergorized as a solid. I still give her hell about it from time to time. So there's a lot of gravy humor in the Franklin family.

She makes damn good gravy now though. Hmmm!

Yeah, S.O.S! My dad loves that. He too first ate it in the army, and he told my mom what it was, and she replicated the recipe for him. I thought it was okay, but dad loved it.

Can't stand SOS or as it is commonly known white gravy. I smell that stuff a lot in the chow halls when I was in the Air Force and it turned my stomach.

Said like a true Connecticut guy, John... I thought you were a Texan now! As an Okie, if I go longer than a week without a great plate of biscuits & gravy, I start to get the DTs.

My mom used to make cream dried beef when I still lived at home, but I never knew it was a breakfast food. My family always ate cereal or some variety of toasted bread product in the mornings. Things like eggs, sausages, french toast, and cream dried beef were all for dinner or Sunday lunches. I didn't try sausage gravy until many years later and I like it so much better than the stuff with dried beef my mom used to make.

I've always preferred white gravy made with bacon drippings instead of sausage fat. My mother always made a good white gravy.
