    Holiday blues - got 'em?

I do, just like I have every year for as long as I can remember. I start feeling glum around mid-December and it goes away a few days after new year's. I know this is pretty common, but I've never really understood why.

Anyone else suffer from the pre/post/holiday blues?

Yep, I've got 'em too. Get them every year.
I think its because everything is really "built up" before Christmas day..with the music and the tv specials...then all of a sudden nothin'!
I'm one of the seemingly few who likes Christmas music, so it's always a big let down when I wake on the 26th to the clock radio playing regular everyday music again. Then you flip on the tv and instead of seeing some marvel of animation trying to save Christmas, its yet another re-run of 21/2 men or CSI.....Christmas is sorta like driving at 100mph towards a brick wall! Its great fun....until you hit the wall.

I have no use for the holidays anymore. I just want the day off from work. As recently as 2005 I managed to get the holidays out of my system. I can pretty much go thru X-Mas or any other religious holiday without feeling pang of X-Mas spirit or whatever you're suppossed to feel. My family doesn't put up a tree or decorate any more.

I was raised Roman Catholic but I don't go to church, I don't observe lent, I don't refrain from eating meat on Fridays and as far as Catholic Guilt that they try to hard-wire into you from childhood-I don't feel any guilt for anything; least of all for being alive, living my life one day at a time. I won't spoil X-Mas for my young nephew but I don't need it.

I hear ya...at least the Hallmark channel is still paying the Xmas movies. And Lifetime Movie network is playing some too. I really wish it was like the song, the 12 Days Of Xmas. With all the shopping, anticipation and preparation that goes into Xmas, I think we should get more than just one day!

no I don't get the blues. Christmas is a time for family and fun and I have lots of both. I get to live vicariosly(spelling?) through my kids as they tear into their presents. What more could you ask for? This year I gave my little boy the first 6 EMCE Star Trek figures and a vintage Enterprice playset. He was so happy he didn't know where to start. Add to that, my brother got him EMCE Soldier Ape and a vintage Cornelius. He was so psyched. This is what Christmas is all about so I don't know why anyone would get blue. I couldn't care less about the religeous signifigance of the holiday, it's all about family to me.

This is a large part of it for me as well. I really enjoy the shopping, wrapping, etc., and once it's done and everything is unwrapped and assimilated it's kind of a letdown.

Christmas I always think of loved ones who are no longer with us.

It's just depressing to think about it, but it's unavoidable.

To be honest, I kind of hate Christmas lately and can't wait till it's past.

Wish we had those channels up here....the only channel that has anything Christmas related right now in Calgary is the channel that shows the tv guide line up--they play Christmas music until Jan. 1st.

I was watching the Rick Steves Travel show on PBS the weekend before Chritmas and he was showing some of the old European traditions of Christmas... Seeing the "old ways", I kind of thought it would be neat to re-introduce them now...the 4 weeks of Advent that start on Dec. 1 and lead up to Christmas Eve, The celebration of St. Nicklaus on Dec. 6th,and St Stephen on the 21st (or was it 28th?) and finally, the celebration of the 12 days that actually BEGIN with Christmas day, and ended in January (which is somehow related to why the Greek Orthodox folks celebrate Christmas on Jan. 7th.).
Seems like a lot, but it does spread the cheer out a bit better, and maybe takes some of the focus off of shopping for gifts, and puts a little more of it on celebrating the season.

Being a person who understands the true meaning of Christmas. I don't deal with the Christmas hype so I don't get the Blues. I do Believe that the Commercialism of Christmas is a bit too much. You gotta get this you gotta get that...nope i don't have to get anything.

I give presents only to my kids and other kids sorry I'm not getting in debt for adults. I enjoy seeing the little ones eyes shine when they open their presents.

Sorry to hear this . . . . I love everything about this time of year . . . except coming back to work, which is where I am today. For me understanding the true meaning of Christmas is what gets me through most of my days. I also love the decorating and hoopla that goes with the holiday part of Christmas, lots of time with family and friends and playing with the kids. Hope everyone has a great new year!

That's how my family sees it; mostly 'cos so many of them have died around the holidays. But we all have the same fatalistic sense of humour about it. (Last year my great Uncle was over for dinner and something went down the wrong pipe. He laughed afterwards, figuring it was HIS turn this year....)
