For those of you who liked the classic Plastic Man series by Ruby Spears, there was an announcement made a few days ago on TVShowsOnDVD.com (http://www.tvshowsondvd.com) that WB is working on bringing the classic 1979 PlasticMan series to DVD for next year. Though WB has made no formal announcement yet, it's nice to know it's in the works.
I recall this series originally being called the Plastic Man Comedy Adventure Show in 1979 following the World's Greatest SuperFriends on ABC and there were several other cartoons in this series with Plas.
I did not care for Baby Plas in the second season in 1980, but I would not mind having those episodes for completion.
Anyway, it's nice to know that PlasticMan may be coming to DVD next year.
Cheers.

That would be awesome. I have yet to find a watchable boot of this series, and I always liked the feel of it. I think my kids would get a kick out of it.

I have the VHS release of the series from the 80's, my kids love it. Nobody liked Baby Plas, ever.

BabyPlas is the Scrappy-Doo of the Super Hero set.

I remember really liking this show (the first season, anyway) but I haven't seen it since it originally aired. My son will get a kick out of it I'm sure.

Wasn't there a segment on the show with a tiny super hero and an ugly dog who hid his face with a small doghouse?

Mighty Man and Yuck got it's own VHS release and I was OK with that.

The Plastic Man cartoon still works, it has a lot of whimsy but suffers from that insanely overpowering Ruby Spears music. I also really liked "Goldie Gold and Action Jack".

I don't really remember that cartoon. I would Definately get it if it comes out on DVD.

Was Fangface on Plas too, or did he have a separate show?

I remember reading Plastic Man stories in Super Friends and Adventure Comics at the time and wondering where Hula-Hula and Penny were. And Woozy Winks annoyed the crap out of me because he wasn't Hula.

Hopefully if this makes it out, maybe Ruby-Spears excellent 88 Superman series will come soon after.

Fangface had his own show. And then on it's second season they added their version of Baby Pla: FangPuss. I kid you not.

I'll buy Plasticman on DVD. And I agree; no one ever liked Baby Plas.

The Ruby-Spears 88 Superman show was above average that's for sure. Really good show. I taped almost every episode back with the first run in 88. I don't believe it's ever been re-run. Even on the cartoon network.

Big fan of "Action Jack and Goldie Gold" too. High adventure on Saturday mornings. It was just fine show period. Wish it was on DVD too. Great show.

You're the only person I know who remembers it, if I didn't own a copy of the VHS I'd swore the whole thing was my imagination.

Thanks for clearing it up about Fangace. I saw one Fangface short and one Action Jack and Goldie Gold on Boomerang in the last few years. I recalled Fangface, but had totally forgotten Action Jack. I do remember Fangpuss...yeesh!

The 88 Superman show has a fine comic pedigree. Marv Wolfman was story editor and wrote much of the show, and Gil Kane did character designs. It's a great mix of elements from the Reeve movies, classic Superman, and the then-new Byrne revamp.

The Plastic Man Comedy Adventure Show originally had 4 segments in a 2 hour show.
1: Plastic Man with Penny and Hula Hula: The Main Attraction

2: Mighty Man and Yukk The World's Ugliest Dog

3: Season Two of Fangface which introduced Fangpuss after airing as a solo series in 1978. Oddly enough, this was the same year that Scrappy Doo was first introduced to the Scooby Doo series. 1979 was the year of the horrible add on characters to the established shows.
4: Now here's some interesting trivia for you. Does anybody here remember the last segment on this series? It was probably the most godawful cartoon that Ruby Spears ever created and from what I can recall, it ran for half a season and was then dropped.
RICKETY ROCKET! BLAST OFF!!!
From my feint memories, I think it took place in the future with four teenagers putting a pile of junk together and it became this crappy character called Rickety Rocket.
Believe it or not, I actually found the intro to this rare piece of crap on youtube.
I heard that Mighty Man was voiced over by Peter Cullen, the future voice of Optimus Prime on the Transformers and the narrator of Voltron. I know that Frank Welker used his Dynomutt voice for Yukk.
Cheers.

Hmmmm....

Plastic Man, eh....?

>RICKETY ROCKET!

I remember that one too. Kinda hard to forget. Even as a kid I thought it was pretty bad.

HAW! OKay, in the first episode did they REALLY fight a giant squid while skiing through the alps?

Add me to the list of those who remember. And yes, Baby Plas blows.

On a related note much like Brian I spent years trying explain a Christmas special called "Nestor, the Long Eared Donkey". Try not to sound like a mental patient when describing the basic plot to someone who's never heard of it. In the mid 90's it came out on VHS and finally my (realtive) sanity was once again affirmed.

RICKETY ROCKET

Yeah, and all the teens were black. They built a crap rocket that could talk outa a junkyard. That show was horrid back then, and Ruby Spears or any animation company today would be burnt to the ground for releasing something so sterotype. Sorta a getto, outer space, speed buggy. Just plain stupid. Cartoon Network or Boomarang showed this crap pile years ago.

And yes I remember seeing it first run.

Now I liked Mighty Man and Yukk. That's a fun show. I can't remember if Peter Cullen was the voice or not. Seems like it was this other fellow who did alot Ruby Spears voices. I know Peter Cullen was the voice of Venger on Dungens & Dragons. Now that was a voice!

Don't remember Rickety Rocket, but it can't be Ruby Spears' worst toon. That honor belongs to the worst Saturday morning toon of all time....TURBO TEEN.

I think Hanna-Barbera bought all the rights to Ruby-Spears shows at some point, and WB now owns HB, so there shouldn't be any problem in WB releasing RS shows, esp. Superman. Get on it WB!!!

You're right! I do recall it was an African American show. But I barely remember how they were portrayed. Oddly enough, I remember their names
were Cosmo, Venus, Splashdown, and Sunstroke. And Rickety Rocket was like a combination of Sanford and Son meets Speed Buggy. Rickety Rocket sounded like Redd Foxx but it was obviously someone else doing the voice.
I can only assume the reason it was dropped was that somebody or some group or organization was probably offended by the show. I do recall the series only having Plastic Man, Mighty Man and Yukk and Fangface beyond that point.
Cheers.

I remember watching the 88 Superman Cartoon when I was in college. The only thing funny about plastic baby was the intro. The doctor tells Plastic Man that he has a bouncing baby boy, (at the same time Plastic Man is bouncing Plastic Baby like a basketball).

I was a junior in high school when the 1988 Superman animated series came on and I turned on the TV on Saturdays just to watch that show. I had stopped watching Saturday morning cartoons in 1986 when the SuperFriends and Scooby Doo left the airwaves but I made an exception for this show in 1988.
As for Turbo Teen, I used to enjoy that series, as ludicrous as it was. I'm guessing they came out with it during the popularity of NBC's Knight Rider.
Cheers.

I totally remember the Superman 88 because it was styled after the Byrne revamp a couple of years earlier, and I really thought that was cool.

I remember really liking Plastic Man too. I still remember Hula-Hula, but the blondes name escapes me.

I never liked the PM series. I thought it was so corny....but I am a big fan of the character. I liked the pilot that was floating around the net with the guy from spongebob...I thought that was pretty cool.

I have the Superman 88 series on tape.....it was pretty decent. The highlight of that was Gil Kane designed the look of the series. I was a huge fan of his version of Superman.

The blonde's name was Penny. As for the 1988 Superman series, I also liked the episode with Wonder Woman in it. But one thing I wish that series could have done was do an episode with Batman in it. It never happened, but in the baseball themed episode with the Prankster, I remember the Metropolis baseball team played against the Gotham Goliaths, so at least somebody from Gotham City turned up.
Cheers.

the batman rights may have been tied up in pre production for the 90 film so they couldn't use bats
