There will be a fair few of us who haven`t even got these but yet they are already on Ebay. How have they been distributed so far? Megomeet and the forums or wider at fairs etc?

Primarily at Megomeet and through members here. I haven't sent any out otherwise which is bothersome.

What members live in Frederick, MD or the surrounding area? Can't be too many. Has anyone been issuing these with orders from their online stores? Could they have gotten them from a purchase? Are they members that are just signing up to get the cards? We need "Mego CSI" to solve this case!!! :wink_y:

I'll tell you what happened. He was one of the people that emailed after I posted that auction on Ebay to say that cards were free. 3 people got in touch asking about it and I sent them cards. And now he's selling what I sent him.
That's. Outrageous. Wow. People SUCK. I'm speechless.

His response to my auction that cards are free.
Hello,
I have visited your site numerous times, but there is nowhere that I can see to obtain these cards (other than purchasing them from other people). I do toy shows here in my area (past 15 years) and would be happy to pass these out so others can enjoy them. If nothing else I would appreciate a set for myself. If your willing I'll be happy to pay shipping/handling & delivery confirmation. I await your response and appreciate your time.
Thankx!
I had him send me $5 for shipping and I sent a nice friendly stack of cards.
Who is the bigger tool in this story? I am so angry I can't see straight.
I didn't even think to look through his history and see the numerous MM card auctions. I am stupid and trusting.

It just seems like a lose/lose situation at the moment. The idea of the starter packs is great and i`m happy to forward them on but until a member proves themselves as not just another fly by night newbie it really is a gamble whether or not what you send will end up on Ebay.
Scott, I feel for you having your trust abused like that.

I make this promise to the board: Not only will I never sell a card, I will never buy one, either. (Even if that means I end up with an incomplete collection).
The whole point of these cards (and what makes them special) is that through giving/receiving/trading we get to experience what makes this a great community. To buy or sell a card takes away from the intent and, quite frankly, makes that card worthless.
It's not that these cards are rare or beautiful that make them special to me, it's the gesture of friendship extended by people I've never met who took the time to "hook me up". That gesture has been repeated several times over by a good number of members here who sent me cards when I had nothing to give back. Once I gained a few extras (again through kind gestures), I couldn't wait to do some trading or just send them on to someone who needed what I had. That's the fun of it that gets lost in a buy/sell type of economy.

I don't know if I need an attitude adjustment or what. I hate making a big deal out of it everytime it comes up, I hate feeling upset about something I can't control, something I shouldn't even be surprised about. :ugh_y:

I think as long as none of us stopp to selling them it's ok. It turns my stomach to think of people making money out of something free. Unfortunately it happens all the time.

True but it sucks when someone lies about what they intend to do with them.

He claims he's just selling the one to recoup the $5 it cost to ship them to him. Whatever. He's sold at least 4 cards for $5 each, so I'm not impressed.

Oh man, that is so f**ked up, what an *** His excuse is as lame as it gets.
Don't feel bad tho, Scott. Even if you had seen his history there'll always be others. There's no way of controling this, other than to stop making Museum cards. And that would be a shame, but understandable. Maybe we can advertise on eBay more with the POTA cards. Let it be known well in advance that POTA cards will soon be released and that they are free and shouldn't be bought on eBay. If sellers carry banners in their auctions advertising the cards weeks before the release hopefully people will have seen them and know to come to the Museum for free cards. You can check the history from newbies asking for them. And becoming a member should be a requirement for getting them. Emails from strangers are harder to check

I was going to suggest that it might have been dealers, as I have sent out a few pairs myself, but none to MD that I recall. The lie is why you feel so abused Scott, just remember how much we appreciate the effort, hopefully that will take some of the sting out of it.

Maybe you should Photoshop Mego Central in the images instead of Mego Museum. Then, interest would die down completely.

I think you're totally justified in being angry. It really disgusts me, so I can only imagine how it makes you feel, Scott. To me, the cards represent the toys, people, and internet forum that I love. I guess to some it only represents free money. I would be furious if I sent someone some Mego Museum cards and I found out that they sold them. If anyone should get paid for the cards, it's the people who create them. If the people who generously design, pay to get printed, and distribute them freely don't want to get paid for them, then nobody else should. I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but I feel like venting.
I can't stand opportunists who take advantage of people's hard work and generosity. It's pathetic. I hope I can somehow find some small way to help put an end to this behavior. I put the "Mego Museum Cards Are Free" banners on my blogs, so it's a start. Now we just need to find some more ways to stop the abuse.

The reason you are angry, and justifiably so, Scott, is that the guy deceived you into sending him the cards so he can sell them. He's clearly a dirtbag for selling even one card.

For what it's worth, this seller is now on my Blocked Bidder list. Perhaps if enough Mego folks refused to do business with guys like this, they'd get the message.

Maybe we should wait for new members to get a certain amount of posts before giving them cards....

I think it`s more of a case of exercising caution. If a newbie comes along, takes the time to introduce themselves and lets us know about their collecting habits etc, it`s a pretty safe bet that the cards will be collected, but if a newbie comes along and in their first post asks for cards with no introduction or anything then i`d be tempted to be cautious or at least try to drag a little more info from them - "Hi, so tell us a bit more about yourself" kinda thing.

The cards were meant to bring in and inspire new collectors. Holding them back to see how serious a new member is defeats the whole purpose of the cards. We can not let a few dirtbags coming here just to grab them and resell them deter us or make us forget the spirit and purpose of the cards in the first place. They should not be held back.
However, handing a big stack of them to a stranger, well, that is a little generous and naive. Scott, I say that in the nicest possible way. You're too nice and too trusting.

I'm hoping that a wider bit of distribution will really hinder this kind of practice, sure they will go on but getting $2-4 over $178 will deter many.
What this guy did was really in poor form, he took advantage, regardless of paying for the postage or not.

I picked up one of each of those Trek cards at Wizard World in Philly last weekend. One of the vendors there had some they were giving away. He was busy at the time, so I didn't get to ask if he was a member here or not.

maybe the best way to fix this problem, would be that you only get the free cards if you've been a member here for a certain period of time or if you have a minimum of let's say 100 posts.I know it would suck for it to have to come to that, but atleast it should eliminate half of the losers that only join for the free cards
Just something to think about
That goes completely against inviting people to join because the cards are free. We might as well put up banners that say "Go ahead and sell the cards because we only want true Mego collectors to have them". Some people may rightfully be more willing to trade with people who are active members, but if we are going to discourage sales, we need to be open to giving cards to people who join because we tell them this is the only place to get them.

I think there is really nothing that can be done to stop the sellers. We can minimize them by offering the cards to perspective members whenever and wherever we can.
