A Cool Mego Find And A Mystery To Boot

I just picked up a Star Trek Tricorder from Dan (Superunderdoggie) yesterday. The piece is loose, but it is minty fresh. It was part of a cool little Mego find he made a few weeks back. Some of you know he met up with a guy who had a box of these in his father's basements. They were in an actual Mego shipping box (the only Tricorder shipping box that I know of!). They all had stickers from various stores that made them look like returns. The stickers were from K-Mart, Penney's etc. Each detailed the flaw with the individual Tricorder, from not rewinding to simply returned.

Dan spent the past few weeks repairing the broken ones (did you know you can actually still buy parts for vintage electronics?) and cataloging the rest.

The mystery lies in the question of the box's origins. My first guess is the seller's father was hired to fix retruns for Mego. He may have been an independent contractor who fixed these type of things for re-sale. Does any one know if this type of thing happened or did they just destroy this type of stock?

There is another theory, but its a bit less reputable. What do you think?

Sometimes stores and distributors auction off damaged stock, or sell it cheaply.

There's a retiree a couple of blocks from my house who buys returned or unrepairable lawn equipment (mowers, trimmers) from local department stores, repairs them like-new and sells them from his home.

That is really cool! Congrats on getting the Tricorder! Hey, does your friend have any more? Do you know if he's interested in selling them?

yeah that's pretty cool,my uncle use to buy returned items from stores all the time, most times they were in perfect condition, just opened item.So maybe if he did do electronic work,he just bought them to repair and resell them.Is there anyway to contact the guy and find out? I mean he has to have gotten them from the Mego company if they were in the original shipping box

I'm looking forward to getting mine from Dan. Hopefully he can get all the sensors working. I have serious questions about the air quality coming out of the vents here at work, and I think this would help me prove it to the building's facilities team.

Its odd, when I ask him how he's coming along with fixing them, he answers in a Scottish brogue that he's tried doing this or that, but nothing seems to work. He says needs another hour, but I tell him quite forcefully that he we only have 17 minutes.

Here is a pic of the find. Just a couple of clarifications though. The box is actually a carded WGSH Shipping case...the first ever to be found!

Also, I stink at electronics so I wouldn't say I'm repairing them....just wiping dust off and testing them. I must admit....I'm still boggled by the find....I dream of this stuff!

There are about 180 or so.....

Here is a link to an eBay auction I have for one. As you can see....most of them are in pretty nice shape.

Great Scott!!!! There are enough Tricorders there to equip nearly all the members of the Mego Museum! I still have one myself from the 1980's.
