    Question on Pirate/Buccaneer Boots

What's the purpose of the cuff? Is it to protect the main body of the boot or to protect laces?
Curious minds want to know. That and the answer will effect how I make the boot in the future.

I think on some boots it is meant to fold up high over the knee, (in real life I mean). I have no idea why, if it was fashionable or for some sort of protection from the elements or something. It have always liked the look, but it doesn't seem to be comeing back around.

I posed the question to someone I've recently had some correspondence with. Turns out he's a bit of a uniform geek. His answer was that the extra material was there for riding. The cuff would be turned up to protect the legs of the rider.

Seems as good a reason as any.

          Hmmmm....

Also; cloth and leather was expensive, so using extra was a sign of affluence. That's why you got stuff like the doublet, and them big poofy sleeves.

Thanks Don. The extravegence as a symbol of wealth angle didn't occur to me. It does explain nonsence like this.

I just always assumed it was there to look purty.

And, I'm sure that's why the artists that created these characters used the boot. It's a great visual that can be easily manipluted to express motion.

I'm eager to see the reason why you started this thread, Troy. Guessing you are going to take your boots up a notch.
