This turned out pretty decent. I went with a low difficulty character that would also look good if done correctly. I'm not completely happy with the Aztec neckpiece so I'll re-do that part sometime soon. All in all, not bad for a first attempt.
I went with the JLA Unlimited style helmet instead of the traditional one. I thought it would look more dynamic and unique. Yup, looking at this crappy picture taken from my crappy camera, that neckpiece as got to go. Ugh.

I like the way it turned out, especially the cape. I know how you feel about going back and looking at certain pieces, only to realize you don't like the way they turned out. The way you designed the necklace is very Megolike, and you should keep it that style. Did you hand-draw it? I would just redraw it and work on getting sharper lines until you're happy with it. Is it paper? Vinyl or pleather might be a good way to go with that too, as it reminds me very much of the black/gold necklace on Isis. Otherwise, it's a great first attempt, and I'm looking forward to seeing your future stuff.

Wow.
Thanks for the cool feedback guys and gals. I did use Doc Mego spell hands for him. I didn't think any other kind would do him justice. The belt is just a piece of craft foam.
THe neckpiece was hand drawn on computer label paper, turned gold by prismacolor pencils and then covered with packing tape for a mild shine and for protection. I then cut around it with an exacto knife, used an additional glue stick for maximum bondage and there he is. I used to work for a magazine and comic book publisher, so I've got some old-school cut and paste tricks.
I used to paint 25mm miniatures for Ral Partha and my own gaming, so that's where my only true strength lies at this point. Thanks again for the awesome commentary. I've got a couple more figs in the beginning stages, so hopefully I'll have something new soon.

A first-timer, you say?
Geez, this is a really nicely put together figure even for a customizer of some experience.
Well done!
VERY, well done!!

I like it as is. The "crappy" neck piece looks like it would be Mego's solution to that design.

Looks good Scott. I think the biggest problem with the neckpiece is the lines are a little on the thick side. If they were a little thinner, it might work better the way you have done it.

All right!! I thought I was alone when it came to making a mego design of the Hector Hall/Dr. Fate. I thought that Egyptian collar piece was an awesome touch to that Dr. Fate outfit.
Apparently DC wanted to kill off Hector Hall so when they brought back Earth 2 they didn't have two versions of him...blah...blah...each their own.
For your first custom, you did a really good job. You should be proud of this piece.
Don't worry about what is proper and how it should work. Worry about how you like things and how you feel they should look. Almost like the member Thunderbolt, he has his own take on JLA figures.
Welcome aboard BTW! Hope you enjoy your stay here.
This is what I did with my Hector Hall version of Dr. Fate awhile ago. I am a fan of that collar design.

Again, guys thanks for the responses I received. I knew when I joined this site I'd get lots of cool tips and advice. And Dave you're absolutely right about the line weight. I'm going to change it up a bit tomorrow and see what a difference it makes. I also originally had trunks/midpiece to go with it, but it ended up looking like a yellow adult diaper. Here's the inspiration for the Hector Hall/JLA Unlimited hybrid figure...

Nice work and I must echo the sentiment that the neckpiece doesn't look at all bad to me. Be proud of it! The figure looks great!

Heh, I did the same thing with my Fate custom. Attempted the trunks/midpiece and it came out looking like a diaper. Glad to know it wasn't just me!
