    Sgt. Rock or Sgt. Fury?

No offense to Sgt. Fury, the classic Kirby/Ayers/Severin art, or the fact that he "grows up" to be Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. but......

I always preferred Sgt. Rock and the Combat Happy Joes of Easy Company (Wildman, Four Eyes, Ice Cream Soldier, Bulldozer, et. al.) any day of the week and twice on Sunday! Ten hut!

I'm going to have to go with Joe Kubert's work on Sgt Rock. Kirby's war stuff comes in behind his superhero work in my books.

On the other hand, Steranko's Nick Fury Agent of SHIELD is still mind-blowing.

My favourite war comics are Harvey Kurtzman's EC era stuff.

tough call. Fury's cooler for becoming a one eyed, cigar chomping secret agent, but Rock had better WW2 action. I really liked the last Suicide Squad incarnation that had Rock and Dozer working for the squad.

Wasn't it revealed that it wasn't really Rock in the Suicide Squad? I think Robert Kanigher always stated that Sgt. Rock died on the last day of battle in WW2.

Nick Fury is just too COOL! Wether it's with His Howling Comando's...or as an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.,....Nick's THE Man!

Any love for The Unknown Soldier?

As a kid, I picked up his series just as it ended. The Dude SHOT HITLER!

I mean Cap only just punched the guy over and over again.

I also really enjoyed what a terrible ******* he was in the Garth Ennis Vertigo Miniseries.

Speaking of Garth Ennis, he did a really excellent Enemy Ace graphic novel two parter set in World War 2.

and don't forget his War Stories one-shots...

Gotta be Rock. Sure he sometimes fought super-villainesque types like the Iron Major, but mostly his stories were more grounded and realistic. Fury was very much a Marvel Super Hero war comic. He works much better as Agent of SHIELD.

Plus, Kubert. I too prefer Kubert's Rock to say his Hawkman.

Another reason I like Rock over Fury is the cool DC war heroes he could cross-over with, like the aforementioned Unknown Soldier, as well as the Haunted Tank, Mlle. Marie, The Losers, Blackhawk.

Sgt. Rock was more "realistic", so i guess as a war hero he beats Nick Fury, but Nick became the coolest spy in the 60s. I did love the Unknown Soldier and Enemy Ace!!!

There was also a great appearance by Sgt Rock in this series. Had the characters met before in any other comic book appearances?

I didn't think it was likely since most of the Enemy Ace's adventures took place during The Great War. Ennis' bringing the Baron into World War 2 was an interesting contrast and inspired commentary on the changing nature of war and technology.

Also love Enemy Ace: War Idyll.
