Don't buy one on my account.
And by the way - Horus is NOT an EMCE Toys product.
It was made by Dr. Mego for Avatar Press for the 2007
San Deigo Comic-Con. Avatar gave me no time and no
budget to get the helmet and jacket done in China, so
it is as good as you can do in home under the gun.

Does that mean Avatar could re-negotiate in several years and we can get the first repro of a repro!

Horus was not a repro - it was a custom figure. After the success of the FX GAH,
Avatar wanted to do a mego-style figure instead of paying thousands to
tool a plastic figure.
They were working with us on the Night of the Living Dead and threw this figure
in with a short amount of time. It took me all summer to get them done, and
nothing moved forward on NOTLD. Finally, after months and months of no
communication, Joe and I decided to do NOTLD without Avatar.
So I don't think that I will ever be making any more Horus figures - even
in twenty years!
I got one for the novelty of it.

Quite frankly, I'm not familiar with the show/comic the figure comes from. I'm not into cartoons (unless they are for 5 yr. olds) and hardly ever read comics.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm not the only one!!!!
But I did start to notice no EMCE or Diamond select logo.
I got to admit it was gutsy since they wanted a figure of him.
And a good thing there are 750 figures.
And sorry doc, I could never think you would think of making a figure of John Horus.

is there a pic of this figure?
I got one.
It's from a recent 7 issue story Avatar comic "Black Summer" by Warren Ellis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Summer). I haven't read it, and it appears to not be completed yet, but the basic conceit is:
The plot revolves around the consequences of a superhero, John Horus, who kills the President of the United States and several of his advisers. This occurs in issue #0 (which, unusually for Avatar, is not a preview, but an introduction to the series, half the length of a normal issue). The seven issue series which follows details the aftermath of the assassination. If you like Warren Ellis, you'll probably find it interesting. I intend to read it eventually.

It was very frustrating - not having the time to do it right. But I
will say that Avatar did pay me in full for the work. But there is
no mention of EMCE Toys or Dr. Mego anywhere on the packaging.
Avatar also never told me that he was planning to sell them through
Diamond Previews - maybe hoping to make retailers think it was
part of the Star Trek line.
The sad thing was walking into Midtown Comics in Manhattan with
our Chinese reps and, since the Star Treks were already sold out -
it was mid-Feb and the owner told me that McCoy/Romulan sold out
on the first day - all I could show them was 4 John Horus' on the pegs.
By the way, your synopsis of the comic is all I ever got found out
about it. I like Warren Ellis' work - which is why I agreed to do this -
I was hoping that I would learn more about the story last fall.
Unfortunately, the more Joe and I pressed Avatar to move forward
on NOTLD, the less they communicated. Finally we realized that they
had no interest in getting these figures made in time for the 40th
anniversary.
Our lawyer checked out the ownership of the film - verified that it
was public domain due to an administrative error on the part of the
producers - and with help from Amok Time Toys - contacted the
actors directly to insure that they got something from the project.
Sorry for the long story, but that project taught me a lot about
being careful who I work with. My reputation is on the line every time.

I saw that figure at my local comic shop. Wondered what was up with that.

If it's any consolation, from comments on Ellis' forum, I think he was told about the same amount about the figure. I'll see if I can find a link.

Same here, I walked into Midtown Comics in NYC one day and saw the figure hanging up. I considered buying it strictly because it was Mego-esque. Don't know jack about the character though..... -Will

I bought one, just 'cause it was a (Doc) Mego, and figured it'd be something for the collection. The story behind it's creation is something though. For what it's worth, and given the short amount of time you had to make it, ya done good, Doc!
